The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 326

He stood next to Lance’s chair, his shoulders hunched, looking uneasy.

“I want Lewis,” Lance said, his voice cool and even.

Adolf’s face changed right away. He looked pale, almost sick, and his voice trembled a little as he asked, “Is this… is this about Catherine?”

Lance just lifted an eyebrow, not bothering to explain. The message was obvious. Lewis was good at his job, sure, but he wasn’t so amazing that Lance would come down and personally ask for him. That only made Adolf more nervous.

“Lance, maybe it’s better if we just let things play out on their own. We probably shouldn’t get involved in their business,” Adolf managed, trying to keep his tone calm even though his back was already soaked with sweat.

He knew he was taking a risk by refusing Lance, but he had to try.

Lance caught on right away. “NextGen Technologies just set up a project in Eldervale. I thought you’d have sent Lewis over there.”

“I talked to Lewis. He doesn’t want to go.” Adolf quickly explained, “His mom’s really sick. She’s getting treatment in Cabinda, and he can’t leave her right now.”

So that was the real reason.

Lance nodded, brow furrowed as he processed it all in silence. He looked deep in thought, while Adolf stood there, trying to read his face and coming up empty. The tension in the air was almost too much.

After a long pause, Lance finally spoke. “Forget it.”

Adolf let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding and sat down, relieved.

But before he could even settle in, Lance was already standing up. “I just remembered something. I’ll have to leave now.”

Adolf quickly got up to walk him out. When he returned, the food on the table was still untouched. He didn’t have any appetite left anyway. He pulled out his phone and called Lewis.

“Lewis, you told me you and Catherine broke up. You weren’t lying, right?”

Lewis’s answer was steady. “Adolf, I don’t lie. If I did, Catherine wouldn’t have gone to Eldervale.”
