Adelina pressed her lips together, her nerves slowly twisting into something sadder.
“The results might not be as bad as you think,” Lance said, his voice even and calm.
“If the results aren’t bad, does that mean our wedding is still on?” The question slipped out before Adelina could stop herself.
She caught the way Lance looked at her, his eyes searching for something.
“I’m just trying to stay positive. I don’t want to end up in the news again and cause you trouble,” she rushed to explain.
Lance stood tall and still, his sharp features softened just a little by the morning sunlight. Even so, the look in his eyes was cool, almost distant, like he was a thousand miles away.
He didn’t say a word, and the silence pressed down on Adelina, making her heart sink.
She was about to say something else when Aaron came hurrying back.
“Lance, the doctor is ready. Adelina can go in now.”
Adelina swallowed, glancing back down the empty hallway. The whole floor was cleared out for her checkup. At the end of the corridor, there was no one. Harrell hadn’t shown up.
He really wasn’t coming?
A wave of frustration crashed over Adelina, and she couldn’t hide how upset she was.
“Adelina, this way please,” Aaron said, stepping forward to guide her.
She looked at Lance one more time, then followed Aaron, glancing over her shoulder every few steps like she might turn back at any second.
Aaron held the door open for her. “Go on in, Adelina. I’ll be right outside. If you need anything, just call.”
Adelina took a deep breath. As soon as she stepped inside, her phone started ringing from her bag.
She pulled back and grabbed her phone, answering right away.
“What? What happened to my mom…”
Panic shot through her voice. She didn’t bother to explain, just turned and ran, phone pressed to her ear.
By the time Aaron realized what was happening, she was already at the elevator.
“Adelina…” he called, starting after her.
