The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 34

Catherine could only guess what Lance had done to get on Fiona’s bad side.

Not wanting to stir things up, she gently changed the subject and tried to lift Fiona’s mood instead.

“Enough, there’s no need to fuss over making an old lady happy,” Fiona sighed, a tired smile on her lips. “I know I’m not exactly the most pleasant company these days, but I only ask one thing of you all. Don’t keep secrets from me, alright?”

She emphasized her point by giving Catherine’s hand two firm pats.

In that moment, Catherine felt exposed, as if Fiona could see right through her. She had secrets she was keeping from Lance, from the entire James family, from everyone.

“I’ll call Susan now and ask her to send over some extra lunch,” Sophia offered, already pulling out her phone and stepping out onto the balcony.

When Susan answered, her voice came through clearly, even though Sophia didn’t put her on speaker. “Adelina made lunch herself. Lance is already bringing it over.”

Sophia turned back to glance at Catherine in surprise, then wrapped up the call with a quick, “Got it.” She looked at Fiona and relayed the message. “Grandma, Adelina made lunch. They’re already on their way.”

Catherine seized the moment. “I need to stop by Lorinda’s later, so I won’t be staying for lunch. It’s about time for me to head out.”

Fiona’s eyes lingered on her, a hint of reluctance in her expression, but she just waved her hand. “Alright, go on. Be careful out there.”

“Take good care of Grandma. No need to see me off,” Catherine said, stopping Sophia from following her. She slipped out of the room, moving quickly.

Once the door closed behind her, the usual hallway noise faded away. Fiona let out a long, heavy sigh, her face clouded with worry.

“Grandma, whose baby is Catherine carrying?” Sophia blurted, frustration in her voice. She’d nearly stopped Catherine from leaving just now.
