"I'm really not a good mom. Jasper was sick and I didn't even notice. If it weren't for Alexa, he could've burned up with a fever and I still wouldn't have known what was going on."
Catherine grabbed a couple of tissues and handed them over. "You're a mom now. No more crying, okay? You have to set an example for your kid."
Lorinda tilted her head back, pressing the tissues to her eyes. They were soaked almost instantly.
"Catherine, my whole life has gone off the rails. I honestly thought that having a kid just meant making sure he had enough money to grow up happy and healthy."
But once he was born, she realized just how little control she actually had.
She'd wanted to be one of those hands-off moms. The ones who only cuddled their kid when they felt like it, and handed him off to the nanny whenever something came up.
But when her baby cried, her heart ached. No matter how exhausted she was, she would force herself to play with him.
When Jasper got sick, it tore her up inside. Her whole mood revolved around her child now.
"When you decided to do IVF, I told you, this is a real person, not some doll you can just buy. Once he's here, you're responsible," Catherine said gently, smoothing out Lorinda's messy hair.
"The fact that you care so much just means you're a loving person. You're already on your way to being a great mom. You're doing better than you think."
A great mom?
Those words felt so strange to Lorinda. She'd always thought of herself as more of a "hot mom" type.
She pulled the tissues away from her eyes, crumpled them up, and tossed them into the trash.
"Catherine, being a good mom is so exhausting. No wonder people usually wait until they're married to have kids. At least then you have someone to share the load."
She glanced out the hospital room door, lowering her voice. "A dad really is the strongest support a mom and kid can have."
Just like earlier, that guy had only messed with them because it was just her and Jasper. No man around.
Catherine studied her for a moment and then put a hand on her forehead.
"You don't have a fever, so why are you talking like this?"
She could basically guess what Lorinda was about to say next.
