“I want what’s best for him. You just want what’s best for yourself,” Harrell cut her off, his voice sharp. “Everything you do is about your own pride, about chasing after Lance. I’m telling you, it’s not too late to drop all of this.”
He could tell Lance was already getting suspicious, but he wasn’t about to clue Adelina in. If she wanted to ruin herself, he wasn’t going to stop her. His advice was just for show anyway. He knew she wouldn’t listen.
“I know I’m not good enough for Lance, but at least my background is better than Catherine’s!” Adelina shot back, her voice tinged with desperation.
“Don’t come to me again. If you do, I’ll tell Lance everything,” Harrell said, pointing at the door. “Leave.”
Adelina stared at him in disbelief. She couldn’t believe he was really cutting her off like this.
“Harrell, we grew up together. Even if Lance wasn’t in the picture, we’re still friends. Aren’t we?”
“You don’t deserve to be my friend.” Harrell’s eyes were cold. “You’re just like everyone else. The only friend I have is Lance.”
Adelina’s lips trembled. “I…”
“Do you need me to remind you what you’ve done?” Harrell’s tone dropped, cold and low.
A shiver ran down Adelina’s spine. The hairs on her arms stood up. She remembered how awful she’d been, the terrible things she’d said to threaten him, and how dark his expression had been that day. Honestly, it was a miracle he didn’t already see her as an enemy.
“Leave,” Harrell said again, his voice flat.
Adelina bit down on her lip so hard she tasted blood, but she didn’t say another word. She just turned and walked out.
“It’s all Catherine’s fault,” she muttered once she was in her car. “If it weren’t for her, Lance wouldn’t treat me like this. If she disappeared, everything would be so much easier…”
She pulled out her phone and dialed. “Sally, I’m in Eldervale. Do you have time to meet up…?”
***
Catherine had never felt Eldervale’s nights this cold before. She was wrapped in Lance’s suit jacket, the car windows shut tight, but still a chill crawled up her back, making goosebumps rise on her arms.
She hugged the jacket a little closer.
