The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 405

Catherine glanced around, making sure no one else was nearby. She pointed to herself, confusion written all over her face as she looked at Lemuel.

Was he really calling her “Mom”?

One of the attendants hurried over to Lemuel and whispered discreetly, “Sir, you’ve made a mistake.”

Lemuel rubbed his eyes, pulled a pair of glasses from his pocket, and slipped them on. He squinted at Catherine. “From a distance, you really do look like my mom,” he mumbled, then shuffled awkwardly closer. “Who are you? What are you doing here?”

The misunderstanding made Catherine even more uneasy. “Lemuel, happy birthday. I’m here for your party, but my friend hasn’t arrived yet.”

“Oh.” Lemuel nodded, still studying her. Even up close, he thought she looked a lot like his mother. He shook his head. “Don’t just wait out here. You’re a guest, come in.”

The attendants finished sorting the gifts. Lemuel told them to go ahead, then went into the ballroom to greet everyone. Catherine followed after him.

Inside, Lemuel was immediately swept up by a group of wealthy young guests, their laughter echoing as they moved off together. Catherine glanced at her phone. Still nothing from Lance. She looked around for a quiet spot to wait.

She turned and spotted Lance in the crowd, standing next to Adelina. Lance was in a sharp black suit, looking calm and refined, with that quiet confidence he always carried. He stood just a little apart from Adelina, but she was practically leaning against him.

Across from them stood Sally, her baby bump impossible to miss. She had one hand on her hip and the other gently rubbing her stomach, clearly sharing some advice.

A newly engaged couple talking about having kids should have looked a little shy and excited, maybe a bit nervous. But for some reason, Adelina’s smile looked forced. Lance’s expression was calm as usual, but there was something else there, something Catherine couldn’t quite read, as he looked down at Adelina.

Catherine looked away. No wonder Lance hadn’t answered her calls. He must have been with Adelina, probably couldn’t sneak away.

She found an empty seat and sat down. Her phone buzzed. It was Gavin.

What time will you be back tonight?

She replied, Not sure yet.
