Suppressing the story was effortless. But dragging those media outlets to court? That would take way too much time, money, and energy. Knowing how Geoffrey was about Adela—how he didn’t want her getting too close—Catherine figured there was no way he’d agree to anything like that.
“It’s kind of embarrassing,” Adela said, leading Catherine to the table. She shot Sally a look, then added, “Go on, tell her.”
Sally hesitated, clearly uncomfortable. “Catherine, I’m really sorry. I was the one who leaked the news.”
She kept Sebastian’s name out of it. If she dragged him in, she’d have to admit she’d lied to him, too, and that would just make things worse. So she decided to take the blame on her own.
“Our family’s always tried to do the right thing,” Geoffrey said, jumping in. “Sally was misled. Catherine, I hope you won’t hold this against her. Let’s not turn this into a grudge.”
His tone was a lot softer than last time, when he’d told her to keep her distance from Adela.
“Exactly,” Adela chimed in, trying to smooth things over. “You and Sally are both pregnant, you’ll have so much to talk about. Spend some time together. I’m sure you’ll end up as friends.”
She sounded like a teacher trying to get two kids who’d fought at recess to make up and play nice.
“I wouldn’t dare,” Catherine replied, her meaning clear even as she kept her words polite. “Thank you, Geoffrey, Adela, but what’s done is done. I’m not holding a grudge.” She made it obvious she wasn’t interested in being friends with Sally. Or in getting too close to the Lee family.
Adela glanced at Geoffrey. He cleared his throat. “Catherine, are you still upset about what I said the other day? I’m sorry for that. My wife is too kind sometimes, and she trusted someone she shouldn’t have. I’ve gotten overprotective about her social life. I shouldn’t have assumed the worst.”
