The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 423

“Harrell?” Catherine looked at Lorinda, curiosity flickering in her eyes.

“Yeah, he works both OB/GYN and pediatrics at the hospital. I pulled a few strings and got him to squeeze you in. Makes everything so much easier.” Lorinda gave her a playful wink. “Not bad, right?”

Catherine paused for a moment. “But I remember he used to totally ignore you.”

Lorinda grinned. “He’s been way too friendly lately. Ever since Jasper was discharged, he texts me every day to check in. I’m pretty sure he’s got some hidden agenda, but I’m not stupid. If I can get some perks without getting played, why not?”

She looked so pleased with herself, like she’d just won some secret game.

Catherine wasn’t impressed. “You think you can outsmart Harrell? Honestly, you’re not even a third as clever as he is.”

“Ouch. Give me a little credit. I can tell exactly what he’s trying to dig out of me. I know what he wants, so how could I possibly fall for it?” Lorinda shot her a look. “Besides, I’d never spill your secrets.”

Catherine already knew that. Still, something about Harrell always made her uneasy. She couldn’t say he was a bad person, but calling him a good guy didn’t feel right either.

“I looked into Harrell a bit,” Lorinda went on, her voice dropping like she was about to reveal something juicy. “He’s had it rough. If it weren’t for his friendship with Lance, he’d probably be done for by now. That’s why he’s risked everything for Lance before. Their friendship is the real deal.”

She seemed genuinely interested in Harrell, but her curiosity was focused on something else. “Do you think Harrell might be gay?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never even met him,” Catherine replied, shaking her head.

“He’s only ever had Lance as a friend, all these years. Don’t you think… maybe he has a thing for Lance?” Lorinda always circled back to that question whenever Harrell came up.

“Lance is good-looking. He’s got that universal appeal. I wouldn’t be surprised if Harrell had a bit of a crush on him. I need to find out if Harrell is into guys or not.”

Catherine realized she didn’t have any real impression of Harrell. During the two years she was married to Lance, Harrell was overseas. Now that he was back in the picture, she remembered a photo in Lance’s study. It was a picture of Lance with another man, placed way up on the top shelf, just out of her line of sight. Thinking about it now, that must have been Harrell.

“Those kinds of questions can really hurt people,” Catherine reminded her. “You should be careful. Try to be tactful.”
