“Did you get into it with the Lee family?”
Catherine blinked, caught off guard. Her brows drew together. “Aside from not getting along with Sally, I haven’t really had any contact with them.” If the Lee family wanted to stand up for Sally or save face, investigating her didn’t make sense. If anything, they could just use the fact that no one knew who her baby’s father was. She’d have no way to defend herself.
Lance leaned in a bit, his tone serious. “Just think back. Was there anything off about your interactions with them?” He’d already asked Aaron to keep an eye on the Lees, but he still wanted to remind her. “You’re in a delicate spot right now. Don’t let anyone take advantage of you.”
Take advantage... He meant her pregnancy, of course. The little life growing inside her. She needed to be careful and stay alert, no matter what. Catherine nodded quietly, pushing down the warmth she felt from his concern.
“Lance, I don’t know why the Lee family is investigating me, but I do know why Sally has it out for me.” She caught a glimpse of someone lurking in the corner and her face instantly went cold. “You and Adelina are getting married soon. We should keep our distance.”
Lance swallowed, his throat suddenly tight. The way she shut him out with that cool, distant look stung more than he wanted to admit.
He started to protest, “Adelina and I—”
“Whatever happens between you and Adelina is your business, not mine. I hope you know where to draw the line.” Catherine cut him off before he could say more. She didn’t care to hear about how happy they were or how much they fought.
A flash of frustration crossed Lance’s face. Her indifference made him feel like there was a wall between them, and it burned.
“Catherine, you’re being impossible,” he snapped.
He was definitely mad now.
Just then, a salesperson rolled a cart out of the elevator, the wheels rattling noisily.
“Catherine, we offer in-home assembly for your crib. Would you and your husband like to put it together yourselves, or would you prefer our staff handle it?” the salesperson asked, glancing between them.
