Two hours later, the car rolled to a stop in front of Serene Beginnings Postnatal Care.
Catherine had drifted off, only to be woken up by Lorinda’s voice. She blinked, taking in her surroundings. The place looked kind of familiar, but it took her a second to remember where she was.
“Why did you bring me here?” she asked, her voice still heavy with sleep.
Lorinda pulled a card out of her bag and waved it at her, eyebrows raised with excitement. “I’ve got everything ready. We’re spending your recovery month here, like queens.”
She hopped out, circled around to Catherine’s side, and pulled the door open. “Come on, let’s go in and pay.”
Catherine shook her head and stayed put. “No. There’s really no need to blow that much money.”
Lorinda stomped her foot in frustration. “I’m just thinking about what’s best for you. This place is right by the hospital. Anything can happen after giving birth, and if something goes wrong, it’s safer to be close…”
She suddenly caught herself, clapping a hand over her mouth. “Forget I said that. Nothing’s going to go wrong. I just think this place is perfect for you.”
“The other place has a medical team, too. Besides, complications are more common for older moms. I’m still young,” Catherine replied, reaching to close the car door. “Let’s just go home.”
Lorinda blocked the door, refusing to let her shut it. “At least humor me. Come out and take a look. Please?”
Catherine stayed in her seat, not saying a word.
“We can afford it. You don’t have to stress,” Lorinda tried again.
“We can afford it for now, but that doesn’t mean it’ll always be like this. We need to be smart about where we spend. You get that, right?”
Catherine knew Lorinda just wanted what was best for her.
But just because things were good right now didn’t mean they always would be. With two kids on the way, money could disappear in a blink. She had to plan ahead.
Lorinda sighed, her shoulders slumping. “I just think, this is probably the only time we’ll have kids. Life in Cabinda is expensive, and I couldn’t afford anything nice for myself. I always felt a little cheated. I don’t want you to feel the same.”
She looked down, voice softer. “My baby doesn’t even know their dad, and yours… well, your baby’s got Lance. Even if he can’t give his kid a fancy life, we can at least give him something close.”
