The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 44

Sophia was never the sentimental type. She had a bit of a stubborn, boyish streak, never one to fuss over feelings or offer comforting words. That was exactly why Belinda preferred having Adelina around. Whenever she had the chance, she'd bring Adelina over to the James family home.

“You’re going to be Lance’s fiancée. You’ll be part of the James family soon. What’s there to be nervous about?” Belinda gave Adelina’s hand a gentle pat and smiled. “Do whatever you want from now on. If anything goes wrong, I’ll take care of it.”

Hearing that, Adelina lit up, practically glowing with excitement.

“Alright, get this paperwork sorted out. I need to take care of your engagement plans. I’m meeting your parents tonight so we can set the date. You and Lance better not be late.”

After rattling off a few more reminders, Belinda hurried away.

Adelina didn’t usually get involved with the company, so trying to get Lance to sign something without him catching on was no small feat. The day slipped by as Lance and Catherine bounced between meetings, handling one work issue after another.

Adelina tried a few times to start a conversation about work, hoping to find an opening, but she never managed to squeeze one in.

As evening rolled around, some project hit a snag and Lance disappeared into a meeting room again.

Catherine could tell Adelina was getting anxious. She tried to help, maybe give Adelina a chance to talk with Lance, but Adelina was completely out of her depth when it came to business. In the end, Catherine just let it go.

By seven, the meeting finally wrapped up.

Catherine gathered her things and followed Lance out of the room.

The moment they stepped into the hallway, Adelina hurried over, squeezing herself between Catherine and Lance.

“Lance, my parents are already at the restaurant. Let’s go or they’ll be waiting forever.”

Lance checked his watch and handed Catherine a file. “Put this in my office.”

Catherine nodded, taking the folder and watching as Adelina dragged Lance away.

She overheard Adelina say, “Belinda wants us to pick an engagement date tonight. Lance, do you have any ideas?”

“They’re really getting engaged?”

“I heard the secretaries talking about it days ago. It’s already in the works.”

“Engagement is just one step from marriage. We’ll probably be at Lance’s wedding before the year’s out.”

Catherine’s steps slowed as managers and department heads streamed past her. Snippets of their conversations tangled in her mind and suddenly it felt hard to breathe.
