“Who do you think you are?”
Sally cut the man off and turned to Lance. “Lance, I’m just asking for some answers for Adelina. I’m not trying to make things difficult for you. If Catherine’s baby isn’t yours, then tell us, whose is it? You’re her boss, you have the right to know.”
“Make things difficult for me?” Lance’s lips curled in a cold, almost mocking smile. “You’re not even qualified to give me a hard time. You’re not qualified to give her a hard time either.”
Sally’s face darkened. Was Lance actually standing up for Catherine in front of everyone?
“So, can I take that as an indirect admission? Is Catherine’s baby yours?”
Lance’s sharp eyes narrowed, and the way he looked at Sally made it clear she was nothing but an annoying piece of gum stuck to his shoe.
Disgusting.
But this was about Catherine’s baby. He wanted to protect her reputation, but there was no easy way out.
“Why do you even care whose baby it is?”
Gavin stepped through the crowd, sizing Sally up and down. “Why don’t you try doing something good for once? Maybe eat some walnuts, boost your brainpower a little. You’re acting like a complete idiot right now. Let’s just hope your future kid doesn’t turn out as dumb as you.”
The Lee family was a big deal in Eldervale. No one had ever dared talk to Sally like that before.
Her face turned bright red with embarrassment.
Before she could retort, Gavin had already shifted his attention to Lance.
“Lance, fancy running into you here. Actually, I have a favor to ask.”
Lance’s eyes were dark, cold, and unreadable. He looked at Gavin but didn’t say a word.
“I want to ask you for someone,” Gavin said, then paused, suddenly amused. “Actually, this is the second time I’ve asked for her in public. And it’s still the same person. Catherine.”
Once in Cabinda, now here in Eldervale.
It was as if Gavin was chasing after Lance everywhere just for Catherine.
He grinned and added, “I really admire Catherine. She’s so competent, and it’s clear you have good taste, Lance. But I was wondering, can you bear to let her go? Can you let me have her?”
Right now, those words—letting her go—felt real and sharp, almost like a physical pain.
Lance had never thought giving something up could actually hurt this much.
He turned to look at Catherine.
