Catherine stared at her phone, watching as the typing bubble popped up on the screen. Her breath was shallow, her eyes glued to the display. She waited, barely blinking, as the little bubble appeared and disappeared, over and over. Then, suddenly, the screen went still. No new messages. Lance had stopped replying.
With a sigh, Catherine locked her phone and let the darkness of her bedroom swallow her. She tossed and turned for ages, trying to quiet her mind, but sleep only came when she was completely exhausted.

Early the next morning, a phone call jolted her awake. Without even opening her eyes, she fumbled under her pillow for her phone and answered.
“Hello, is this Catherine?”
“Speaking. Who’s this?”
“This is Serene Beginnings Postnatal Care. I’m just calling to confirm your reservation with us. Your due date is August twenty-eighth. We’ll get your check-in paperwork ready about two weeks before that, and you can bring your hospital bag in early if you’d like…”
The woman on the line sounded warm and professional, explaining everything in detail.
Catherine cut her off gently. “Sorry, I think you have the wrong person. I didn’t make any reservation with you.”
“Oh, the reservation isn’t under your name. It was made by Adela. She’s already paid for everything. You just need to come in when the time comes.”
The staff member carried on, explaining what Catherine would need to do for check-in.
Catherine listened, but any trace of sleepiness was gone now. The moment the call ended, she sat up in bed and dialed Adela’s number.
Adela picked up almost immediately. “Catherine?”
Just hearing her name, Catherine could tell Adela was both happy and surprised.
“Adela, I just got a call from Serene Beginnings. Did you book a room for me?” Catherine asked, getting right to the point.
“Yes, you and Sally are due around the same time, so I thought it made sense to book a spot for you too. I saw you visit the place and then leave. Were you worried about the price?”
Adela’s voice was gentle, full of concern, like a caring aunt.
