"Are you refusing to come home because you're forced to stay with Lance for the baby's sake?" Adela glanced around to make sure no one was listening, then leaned in and whispered conspiratorially, "Don't worry, your father and I are on your side. We'll do whatever it takes to get you and the little one out of here—even if it kills us."
A throbbing pain shot through Catherine’s head. For the first time, she truly understood the meaning behind the old adage: There are none so blind as those who will not see.
"Exactly," Catherine replied, deciding it was easier to just go along. "Lance has me trapped here. He won't let me or the baby leave, and everything the two of you did and said just now was recorded by the hidden cameras in this room. Rescuing me won't be nearly as simple as you think. If you're serious, you'll have to take on the entire James family head-to-head. But I believe you'll be able to crush them under the weight of public opinion and bring the baby and me home. Sure, the Lee family probably won't survive, but at least we'll be together again." With that, she simply passed the decision back to them. "You wouldn't just abandon me now, would you?"
Geoffrey and Adela were caught off guard, left standing there in uncomfortable silence, four eyes locked on Catherine but unable to utter a word.
"How about this," Catherine said, pressing her advantage. "I'll draft up a sabotage plan—targeting SilverLeaf Industries for the next six months. We'll block, undermine, and disrupt their operations at every turn. It'll cost the Lee Group a fortune in money and effort, but I promise it will give SilverLeaf no end of headaches. Treat it as your opening move against Lance. I'm not that important to him, so he probably wouldn't go scorched earth just to keep me here. With a little pressure, he might just let us go."
If the Lee Group went to war with SilverLeaf, their own destruction would be inevitable. At best, SilverLeaf might lose ten percent—minor collateral for a giant. The scale of power made it painfully clear that Geoffrey and his family were hopelessly outmatched by Lance.
And yet—
"Why the sudden hesitation?" Catherine asked when their silence stretched, curling her lips into a wry smile. "Weren't you just saying you'd gladly risk Lance's wrath, as long as it meant you could bring me home?"
"We can't know what we're willing to risk if you don't tell us what’s really going on," Geoffrey grumbled, his patience worn thin by Catherine’s relentless barbs. "So, the kid—is he really Lance's?"
