Catherine stayed silent.
After a long moment, the conversation naturally died down, and Alexa asked, "Catherine, you haven't had breakfast yet. Want to eat now? I can heat something up for you."
"Sure, thanks." Catherine carried Lanny into the dining room, unwilling to be separated from him for even a second.
As she ate, she finally remembered to reply to Lorinda's text, recounting how badly the storm had frightened Lanny last night.
Lorinda texted back immediately: [Honestly, there's just some stuff men handle differently. Since taking Jasper to the Lee family estate, I've realized my approach to parenting him sometimes falls flat. My dad has this whole male perspective that just works for him. It hasn't even been that long, and Jasper is already closer to his grandpa and his uncle than he is to me.]
Lorinda was actually jealous because Jasper had insisted on sleeping in his uncle's room for two nights in a row.
Catherine didn't reply. She just set her phone face down on the table.
Her determination to secure full custody of Lanny wouldn't waver for any reason.
She could see that Lance was cut out to be an amazing father, but she had absolutely no faith that he was a decent husband.
A loveless marriage was like chewing cardboard. She had been chewing on it for two years, and she couldn't force it down anymore.
"Catherine, Lance said he went to the office and won't be back for lunch, so you shouldn't wait for him."
Susan carried a grocery bag of fresh produce through the dining room and into the kitchen. "What are you in the mood for? I'll get started!"
"Anything is fine," Catherine replied.
"I'll surprise you then." Susan pulled the vegetables out one by one, organizing them in the fridge. "Lance must not have slept a wink last night. He had terrible dark circles when he left this morning. There must be a massive crisis at the office, otherwise he would've just stayed home to rest."
When Catherine had finally drifted off last night, Lance had still been sitting guard beside her and Lanny.
Even if he had managed to sleep, it couldn't have been for long before the sun came up.
"Catherine, why don't you bring him some lunch?"
Susan suggested, suddenly remembering. "He skipped breakfast today. If he keeps working through lunch on an empty stomach, he’s going to crash."
"I..."
"I've got Lanny covered. You just go ahead. Cooking for one is always a hassle anyway, so making portions for both you and Lance is perfect."
Alexa walked in with another bag of groceries. "I noticed Lance picked out all these ingredients himself. He's incredibly thoughtful."
"It's fine, I'll just call him,"
Catherine said, pulling out her phone and dialing Lance's number.
He picked up almost instantly, his deep, magnetic voice filling the line. "What's wrong? Is Lanny okay?"
"He's fine. I'm downstairs in the lobby. I brought you lunch."
"Wait right there." Lance dropped the directive and immediately hung up.
Catherine put her phone away and smiled at the receptionist. "He should be calling your line any second."
The receptionist practically hovered over her desk phone. "He's in a meeting with Mr. Lee right now, so I really didn't think he'd pick up."
"Mr. Lee?" Catherine asked, surprised. "Which Mr. Lee?"
"Geoffrey, from The Lee Group," the receptionist replied, before suddenly remembering all the wild tabloid rumors.
She didn't know if they were true, but the gossip strongly suggested that Geoffrey was actually Catherine's biological father.
