Moss turned to Louise, his eyes cold and sharp. “Louise, don’t you think you owe me an explanation for all of this?”
Louise knew there was no way out now. There was nothing left to argue. She met his gaze, her voice flat. “Moss, what exactly do you want me to explain?”
Her attitude made his anger boil over. He stepped closer, grabbed her by the throat, his grip tight and furious. “Louise, I trusted you. I trusted you more than anyone. Why would you do this? Joanna is my wife. Why would you go after her? She nearly died giving birth, and all this time I was protecting you, thinking you were some innocent, good person.”
Louise struggled to breathe, his angry face filling her vision. She managed a bitter, twisted smile. “The innocent Louise you knew is gone. She died a long time ago.”
Moss’s eyes were burning red, his whole body radiating icy rage. He looked almost inhuman. “What does that even mean? Louise, your father died for the Wade family. We took you in. I treated you like my own sister. Wasn’t that enough for you?”
She glared at him, voice shaking with something between heartbreak and fury. “Of course it wasn’t enough. You gave me houses, a mansion, but none of that was what I wanted. What I wanted was you.”
Moss froze, staring at her in disbelief.
She pressed on, voice cracking. “Moss, we grew up together. We were always side by side. If it weren’t for Joanna, I would have married you. I should have been Mrs. Wade.”
Her hand almost brushed his cheek, but Moss turned away sharply, shoving her aside. Louise lost her balance, crashing to the floor in a heap.
Moss looked down at her, his expression cold, his voice like ice. “Let me make one thing clear. I never loved you. Not before, not now, not ever. My only mistake was not seeing who you really were. My family owed yours a lot, but that debt is paid. From now on, you and I have nothing to do with each other. If you ever hurt my wife or anyone close to me again, I’ll make sure you regret it.”
His anger was so intense it left him shaking. He couldn’t believe he’d let Louise get away with so much, couldn’t believe the person who hurt Joanna was someone he’d trusted and protected all these years.
Louise’s face went white as a sheet. She knew it was over. She’d lost Moss. This time, it was for good.
