What?
Out in the hall, David, Moss, and Joanna all froze in shock.
…
Jessa and Louise made their way back together. Sure, everyone now knew about Louise’s dabbling in Castle Rock’s forbidden magic, but that didn’t matter. They hadn’t lost.
Jessa’s eyes sparkled. “Louise, do you really think David will marry me?”
Louise lifted her mug, completely at ease. “Of course he will. You just focus on being the perfect bride. I’m the only one who can fix David’s Heart Connect.”
Jessa clung to Louise’s arm, her voice almost giddy. “Louise, you’re always so good to me.”
Louise glanced at her with a hint of a smile. “Jessa, you’re my daughter now. Of course I’ll treat you well.”
Jessa didn’t miss a beat. She called out sweetly, “Mom!”
In Jessa’s world, it didn’t matter who you were. If you were useful, if you treated her well, you could be ‘Mom’ in an instant.
Just then, a maid hurried in, breathless. “Ma’am, Miss, something just arrived for you.”
Louise looked up. “What is it?”
The maid held out a gold-trimmed invitation. “It’s an invitation, ma’am.”
Louise took the envelope and opened it. Jessa leaned in to see. As they read, both of their faces darkened.
She slumped into a chair, her voice barely a whisper. “No way. Moss and Joanna already did a DNA test. They shouldn’t get suspicious again so soon.”
Louise nodded, her eyes cold. “That just means we have to move faster. If they want us at their party, we’ll be there.”
Jessa’s lips curled into a smirk. “So what if Ella’s their stepdaughter now? She still can’t have David. This round is still ours.”
They shared a knowing look and smiled, shadows flickering behind their eyes.
…
The night of the party arrived. The Wade family mansion glowed with light. Every influential family in the Capital was there, the air thick with wealth, power, and secrets. Tonight, this was where reputations would be made or broken.
