“Jace?” Victoria’s voice was soft but filled with hope.
Lilly froze for a second. She knew why Victoria would mistake him for Jace. The first time Lilly saw this man, she’d thought exactly the same thing.
“Victoria, he’s not your brother,” Lilly said quietly.
Victoria shook her head, stubborn and desperate. “No, it’s him. I know my own brother. There’s no way I’d get it wrong. Jace!”
It had been three years since Victoria last saw Jace. He was all she had left in this world, her only family by blood. She couldn’t believe she’d make a mistake about something so important.
“Victoria, listen to me. Calm down. That’s not him,” Lilly insisted, trying to keep her voice steady.
The man in the driver’s seat finally turned around, his expression unreadable, his tone flat. “You’ve got the wrong person. I’m not your brother.”
Victoria wouldn’t let go. “I don’t believe you. Take off your mask. I want to see your face!”
“Victoria,” Lilly tried to stop her, but the man had already moved.
“Alright,” he said simply.
He pulled off his mask. The scars on his face were raw and jarring, the kind of wounds you never forget.
Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. “Your face…”
The man put his mask back up, his eyes cold and distant. “Is that enough? I’m not what you think I am.”
“I… I…” Victoria stammered, lost for words.
“I have something to do. I’m leaving.” He pressed the gas pedal, and the taxi rolled away, taillights disappearing into the night.
Victoria took a shaky step forward. “Jace!”
Lilly grabbed her and held her close. “Victoria, I know you miss your brother, but that man really wasn’t him.”
Victoria’s tears finally spilled over. “Lilly, where is he? Why hasn’t he come back in three years? Did he just forget about us?”
Lilly’s eyes burned, her heart aching in ways she could barely hide. If only Victoria knew how much it hurt her too.
A notification pinged a moment later.
He’d accepted the money. “You’re welcome.”
His reply was short, cool, and distant.
Lilly laughed at herself and put her phone away, leaving Victoria’s room and walking into the living room.
May was waiting for her. “Lilly.”
May was her mom. She was stylish and young-looking, always full of energy. She and Mr. Lynch had a good marriage and only ever had Lilly, their one precious daughter.
“Lilly, is Victoria asleep?” May asked.
Lilly nodded. “Yeah, Mom. She just fell asleep.”
May gave her a gentle look. “Good. There’s something we need to talk about. The Matthis family called earlier. They want our families to meet and talk about the marriage arrangement.”
