Since Lilly and Lola were both girls, Jason walked them to their room and quietly stepped out to give them some privacy. Lilly helped Lola get dressed, then called out, “You can come in now.” Jason came back in.
Lola’s eyes lit up. “Godmother, is Godfather going to sleep with us tonight?”
Lilly shook her head. “Of course not.”
“Why not?” Lola asked, her voice full of curiosity.
Lilly kissed her on the cheek. “Because you’re a little girl, Lola. You can only sleep with your daddy, not with any other man. That’s just a special rule for us girls.”
Lola nodded, half understanding. “That’s what Mommy told me, too.”
Lilly handed Jason a storybook. “I’m going to take a shower. Can you read Lola a story?”
Jason took the book and smiled. “Sure, leave it to me.”
As Lilly walked toward the bathroom, she glanced back. Lola was already lying quietly in bed, while Jason leaned against the headboard, reading to her. His voice was low and warm, making the fairy tale sound even more magical. He really was so patient with kids.
A gentle smile played at Lilly’s lips as she went to shower.
By the time Lilly came out, Lola was fast asleep. She lowered her voice. “Is she asleep?”
Jason put the book aside and tucked Lola in. “Yeah, she’s out.”
Lilly dried her hair with a towel, her hair still damp. “Alright, Mr. Farill, you can go sleep in the room next door.”
Jason reached out, caught her by the arm, and tugged her onto his lap. “Are you trying to kick me out?”
Lilly gave him a look. “What did you expect?”
Jason grinned. “Can I stay here tonight? I’ll sleep on the couch.”
“There’s a whole bed next door,” Lilly said, raising an eyebrow. “Why do you want the couch?”
He looked at her, completely serious. “Because you’re here.”
Jason leaned in for a kiss, but Lilly quickly pressed her hand over his mouth. “No way, Lola’s here.”
