A doctor’s voice echoed from the hallway. “Kent, can you come get these test results?”
“I’m coming,” Kent called back and slipped out of the room.
Now it was just Jason, alone in the hospital bed, fast asleep.
The door creaked open. Someone slipped inside.
It was Lilly.
She moved quietly to his bedside, her eyes fixed on Jason’s pale, sleeping face. He looked so different with his skin washed out and stubble shadowing his jaw. Tired. Worn out.
Back when she first knew him as Monaghan, he didn’t have much, but he was always sharp and full of energy. Later, as Jason, he became a star in the business world, someone everyone looked up to.
But she had never seen him like this before. So quiet. So fragile.
Lilly knew she shouldn’t have come. She’d promised herself she wouldn’t, but she just couldn’t help it. No one would ever know. She just needed to see him, just once.
Her eyes stung, and before she knew it, heavy tears spilled over, tracing hot, wet paths down her face.
Jason, you big idiot.
She reached out, her fingers trembling as she brushed his face. Please get better, Jason.
Seeing you like this hurts more than you know.
All at once, Jason’s eyes fluttered open. He grabbed her hand, gripping it tight.
Lilly froze, startled to see him awake.
He looked at her, his eyes lighting up with hope. “Lilly, you came. I knew you would.”
He tugged her down, pulling her into his arms and holding her like he never wanted to let go.
“Lilly, I knew you weren’t that heartless. I knew you still loved me. Please, let’s not break up. Let’s go back to how we were.”
