Victoria wrapped her arms around Lilly and said, “As long as I’m here, nobody else is getting to be my sister-in-law.”
That warmth in Lilly’s chest grew even stronger. No matter what ended up happening with Jason, she knew all the affection she’d given Victoria hadn’t been for nothing.
A moment later, Jason called out from the kitchen. “Dinner’s ready! Come eat!”
Lilly led Victoria into the dining room. Waiting for them on the table was a steaming bowl of chicken soup and three simple, appetizing sides.
Lilly couldn’t help but admire Jason’s skill. For someone who didn’t know how to cook at all, these dishes were impressive. He’d managed all this in such a short time.
Jason set out the bowls and utensils. “Let’s eat.”
Lilly sat down next to Victoria, feeling a little guilty. She was supposed to be the one taking care of Victoria, but honestly, she hadn’t been much help at all.
She managed a few bites of porridge, but her stomach wasn’t up for much.
Victoria noticed right away. “Lilly, how come you’re eating so little?”
Lilly tried to play it off, not wanting to say anything about her pregnancy. She smiled. “I just haven’t had much of an appetite lately.”
“Why not? Are you getting sick too?” Victoria leaned in with concern.
Lilly stayed quiet for a second. She wasn’t sick—she was pregnant. There was a tiny little life growing inside her.
Suddenly, Jason looked up from across the table and said, “Is my cooking that bad, or do you just lose your appetite eating with me?”
Lilly blinked in confusion. Where did that come from?
Victoria shot Jason a look. “What are you talking about?”
