Hanna was calling. The screen lit up with her name, and Jason’s phone buzzed on the table.
“I’m going outside to take this,” Jason said, grabbing his phone as he stepped out the door.
Victoria rolled her eyes. “What kind of call does he need to leave the room for? Seriously.”
Lilly grinned, guessing that Jason and Hanna probably wanted privacy for a long, sweet chat. With her and Victoria listening in, that would be kind of awkward.
“Don’t stress about it, Victoria,” Lilly said gently. “Come on, eat your porridge before it gets cold.”
Victoria picked up her spoon. “Lilly, I’ll call someone later to bring over something sour for you. Want fruit, or maybe a snack instead?”
Watching Victoria’s earnest expression, Lilly couldn’t help smile.
After a while, Jason still hadn’t come back. Lilly and Victoria took quick showers and crawled into bed.
“Did your brother go back to the office?” Lilly asked, turning to Victoria. Jason was always caught up with work. It was late now, so odds were, he wasn’t coming back tonight.
“Probably. I messaged him but he hasn’t even replied—he’s probably swamped.”
That was fine. When Jason was around, her heart just felt restless anyway.
Lilly tucked the blanket snugly around Victoria. “Get some rest. You’ll get better faster if you sleep.”
Victoria curled up next to her, looking happy and comfortable. “You too, Lilly. Sleep well. Goodnight.”
“Night.”
It didn’t take long for Victoria to drift off, but Lilly had a hard time winding down. Usually she fell asleep so easily, but tonight her mind was a mess. Was Jason working late? Or was he still talking with Hanna? What were they up to?
She tried not to think about it, but her brain just wouldn’t cooperate. Jason was all she could think about.
At some point, exhaustion took over. Lilly’s eyelids grew heavy and she slipped into a dazed, half-dreamy sleep.
