Gideon didn’t flinch. “She is.”
Matthew’s nostrils flared, but he had nothing left to say to that. He looked at Sebastian. “I’m taking my daughter home.”
Sebastian nodded. “Three months house arrest, to be supervised by your pack. After that, the matter is closed.” He kept his voice easy, but it clearly wasn’t a suggestion.
Matthew set his jaw but didn’t argue. Even he knew better than to ignore Sebastian’s orders.
“Come on, Fiona.” Matthew was already moving toward the exit. “We’re leaving.”
Fiona waited for the guards to uncuff her wrists before following him. Just as she brushed past me, I grabbed her shoulder.
She froze and looked at me out of the corner of her eye.
I lowered my voice. “Fiona, I know your father has very specific ideas about what your life should look like. But you’re eighteen. You have plenty of options ahead of you that don’t involve making yourself smaller to fit someone else’s idea of what a woman should be.”
Her lips parted.
“Educate yourself,” I whispered. “Figure out what you actually want, not what you’ve been told to want. And don’t let any man, including your father, push you into doing things you don’t want to do ever again.”
Fiona held my gaze. Her eyes watered, but she didn’t let the tears fall. For a moment, she just looked at me, lips trembling like she wanted to cry but wouldn’t let it happen.
Finally, she nodded, lowered her gaze, and followed her father out of the room.
Once they were gone, I turned and went upstairs without saying another word.
The rest of the day moved slowly. I didn’t emerge from my room, and no one bothered me. I appreciated that. One of the servants brought me dinner, which I ate alone at the little table under my window.
By the time the light outside had gone dark and the moon had climbed up to replace it, I was sitting on the edge of the bed in my pajamas, running a comb through my damp hair. The house was quiet. Bjorn had gone to sleep already.
The knock came just as I was reaching to shut off my light.
Figuring it was Sebastian coming to check on me, I stood and opened the door. To my surprise, though, it was Gideon who was leaning against the doorframe.
“You’re still here?” I blurted out.
His lips curved faintly. “Had business to attend to regarding the whole situation. Sebastian is letting me stay the night. Hope that’s alright with you.”

“It’s not my house,” I pointed out.

Gideon nodded. I looked down then, noticing for the first time that he was holding a bottle of red wine and two glasses.
“The moon is still full,” he said, tilting his head toward the window at the end of the hall where the light was already coming through in a thick silver shaft across the floor.
“It’s technically waning,” I said. “Just looks full.”
“I wanted to see you.” His voice turned a little more serious. “Even if we just talk. Even if nothing else. happens and you kick me out in an hour. I’ve had a long day, and so have you, and I just…” He held up the bottle slightly. “Would you have one drink with me?”
I looked at him. I knew what he was implying. I could see the glimmer in his eyes.
