The Last Time I Cried Your Name novel Chapter 276

Galen popped open the car door and dropped his keys into the console, barely paying attention. Just as he was about to start the engine, something in the corner of his eye made him freeze.

“Oh my... Petty!” His hand flew to his chest as his heart nearly leapt out of his ribs.

“Drive.”

Petty was curled up near the passenger seat, her long dark hair a tangled mess. She stared straight at him, eyes red and empty, like she’d already given up on the world.

For a split second, he really thought he’d stumbled across a ghost. The adrenaline hit him hard.

He always forgot to lock his doors when he parked. He didn’t expect this girl to sneak in on him like that.

“Drive,” Petty insisted, her face set and serious. She spoke with a force that almost felt out of place on someone so frail.

She could look as tough as she wanted, but her pale skin made her seem all the more vulnerable.

Galen remembered everything that happened that morning. He’d treated Petty like a little sister for years, so it hurt to see her like this. He couldn’t help softening his voice. “I can’t take you out of here.”

“Look, I can’t beat Franco in a fight, for one thing. And I’d never do anything to betray him. Trust me, just go back for now, okay? Franco keeps his promises. If he said something, he’ll keep his word.”

A lump grew in Petty’s throat. She pressed her lips together, fighting the sting in her eyes. “Just act like you didn’t see me. Please, Galen. Just take off already.”

Was this what Franco thought counted as treating her right? Locking her up and pretending it was for her own good?

Galen sighed, gripping the wheel as he glanced out the window. He couldn’t bring himself to meet her eyes. “I’m sorry.”

He slid over, pressed the release, and the passenger door swung open.

Petty spun around just in time to catch Franco striding over, all icy and unapproachable.

Her heart twisted. She shoved the car door closed, then lunged at Galen. In the heat of the moment, she flung open the driver’s door and kicked him out of the car with a force that surprised even her.
