The Officer's Runaway Wife and Secret Son novel Chapter 551

At half-past five, Rhys stood outside the kindergarten, surrounded by parents waiting to pick up their children.

A few recognized him and whispered among themselves, but no one dared to approach.

The dismissal bell rang, and the teachers led a line of children out.

Felix was thrilled to see Rhys and bolted straight into his arms.

"Dad!"

Rhys caught him easily and hoisted him up. "Did you have fun at school today?"

"Yeah! Sophia said my drawing was pretty, and I had an extra egg tart!" Felix threw his arms around his neck, chattering away as he spilled all the exciting news of the day.

The two of them laughed and chatted all the way back to Riverside Court. As soon as they pushed the door open, the delicious aroma of dinner greeted them.

Clara carried a plate of garlic butter shrimp. Seeing them, her eyes crinkled in a warm smile. "You're back. Wash your hands, dinner's ready."

At the table, Felix ate with relish.

Once the boy finished and ran off to his room to read, Rhys walked into the kitchen and naturally took the soapy dishes from Clara's hands.

Over the sound of running water, he kept his gaze lowered and suddenly spoke. "Clara, the people from Internal Affairs came to talk to me today."

"I know. You texted me about it this afternoon."

"I was the one who gave them the evidence."

Clara's hands paused for a second, but she didn't look overly surprised. "I figured. No one else could have tracked his finances so thoroughly."

"I started keeping records of his dealings a long time ago, even before I met you. But I never made a move." Rhys turned around, locking his gaze with hers. "There was too much at stake."

He pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have kept this from you for so long."

Clara looked up at him. "Why didn't you tell me? Were you afraid I'd think you were cold-blooded for plotting against your own mother and stepfather?"

Rhys nodded earnestly. "Yes."

He lowered his eyes, slowly revealing the deep-seated insecurities and fear of the unknown that he had harbored for so long.

"I was afraid you'd think I was a dangerous person, that you'd look at me like I was some kind of monster."

During those dark years, collecting evidence against Eric was the only way he could find any sense of balance.
