"What? Not to your liking?"

Tamara shook her head, her voice weak. "No. I just don't have much of an appetite."

Remembering the plan she had formed last night, Tamara took a deep breath and cautiously tested the waters.

"Mom, I'd like to visit my family for a bit."

The main reason was that staying at the Sherwood house had become absolutely suffocating. Tamara knew the Sherwoods still needed her here, so this request was partly to gauge Gloria's reaction and partly a subtle threat.

Sure enough, Gloria paused just as she was picking up her coffee mug, her brows knitting together instantly.

"Back to the Sloan family? What kind of stunt are you pulling now?"

Ever since Tamara moved back in, Gloria believed she had treated her quite well.

Yes, she had never been stingy with Tamara's food or clothing. If this were any other household, someone who pulled the stunts Tamara did would have been tortured out of their mind by now.

She didn't expect Tamara to be so ungrateful as to try and use this as a bargaining chip against her.

Gloria set down her coffee mug, her tone brimming with obvious impatience.

"Has the Sherwood family wronged you in some way recently?"

"Have we ever shortchanged you on food or clothes?"

"You have a private doctor on call and staff attending to you 24/7. What more could you possibly want?"

Tamara lowered her eyelashes, her fingers absentmindedly twisting the hem of her shirt, looking every bit the picture of a wronged, innocent victim.

"Mom, that's not what I meant. The family treats me very well... I'm very grateful. I just miss my parents."

She looked up, her eyes shining with unshed tears, her tone pleading and helpless.

"Mom, you know how it is."

"Lately, I can't eat, I can't sleep, and I feel so anxious all the time... I just want to go home and have my mom stay with me for a bit."
