The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 806

"The owners of these kinds of establishments usually answer to someone higher up the food chain," Callahan explained smoothly as he dialed a number. "Having the right person make a call will be a lot faster than letting those two girls panic outside the doors."

He knew Leilani didn't have experience dealing with the city's underbelly. And honestly, it took exactly zero effort on his part. If helping her friend saved Leilani from stressing out, it was a no-brainer.

The line connected. Callahan was brief and commanding, relaying the name of the club and Milford's physical description. "...Right. Get it done," he finished, hanging up.

He turned back to Leilani. "Tell them to stay by the entrance. We'll have an answer in a few minutes."

While Yvonne and Judie waited in agonizing suspense outside, things in the dark alleyway had taken a grim turn.

Milford was curled on the damp, filthy concrete. The massive blood loss from the head wound had drained the heat from his body, and his vision was blurring into a tunnel of dark shadows. Hot blood continued to seep into his eyes.

Every breath felt like shattered glass slicing through his chest.

Through the ringing in his ears, he could faintly hear Blondie arguing with his crew.

Seeing how much blood was pooling around Milford, the adrenaline had worn off, and panic was setting in. Blondie nudged Milford's ribs with his boot. Milford didn't flinch. He looked completely lifeless.

"...Shit... he's not moving..." someone muttered. "I thought you said this guy was tough. Why'd he go down so fast?"

One of the younger thugs sounded terrified. "Boss, did we kill him?"

Blondie ran a hand over his face, highly agitated. "I told you idiots not to go so hard! Who the hell took a bat to the back of his head?!"

That was attempted murder. Blondie just wanted to teach the guy a lesson, not catch a homicide charge. If this guy died, Blondie was the one going to prison.
