In the quiet space, Felicia sat for a moment, then stood up and said, "You..."
She had barely spoken when she heard Max ask, "How was lunch today?"
Felicia paused in her motion to rise and answered calmly, "It was fine."
"How was the New Zealand beef brisket?" he asked again, his tone so even it sounded as if he were genuinely just asking for a food review.
Felicia felt there was more to his question, but she couldn't guess his underlying meaning. She replied naturally, "The meat was indeed very tender."
As soon as she finished speaking, she heard the man let out an ambiguous chuckle, his gaze even carrying a hint of mockery as he watched her.
Meeting his eyes, Felicia felt an inexplicable tightness in her chest.
"There was no beef brisket in today's lunch."
Felicia tightened her fingers, lowered her eyes, took a quiet breath, and explained, "I had the sausages someone sent today. I couldn't finish the lunch you sent."
"It seems these sausages are much more appealing to you."
Max said this as he picked up his fork and took another piece.
Felicia remained silent, offering no response.
"You didn't eat it, but why lie?"
His words left Felicia unsure of how to counter. After a moment of silence, she said, "I didn't mean to lie. You asked me how it tasted, and I couldn't exactly say I hadn't had it."
Max continued in his unreadable tone, "You certainly know how to consider other people's feelings."
Listening to him, Felicia felt a sour knot in her stomach. She retorted, "That was just a normal, polite response."
Max gave a low chuckle and didn't press the matter further.
Felicia stood up and said, "Take your time eating."
Max didn't try to stop her.
After Felicia left, Max's phone buzzed. He picked it up and answered, "Hello."
