“She appears only to be sleeping… everything still seems normal,” Eliza said for what felt like the hundredth time in the last 24 hours.

Judy hadn’t moved from the bed; she hadn’t woken up, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. But she’s still asleep, and it worried me more than anything. I hadn’t slept since she arrived at the clinic.

“You really should get some rest, Alpha,” Eliza told me, her voice soft.

The room was dimmed, and I sat at Judy’s bedside, my fingers entwining with hers. At one point, I thought she was going to wake up. Her breathing pattern changed, and my wolf sensed that she was at the edge, ready to open her eyes. Her wolf had made herself known to mine, and it stirred something inside of me, but then it went away as quickly as it came.

I hadn’t spoken… I barely took my eyes away from my mate.

Eliza sighed, and before she could say anything more, there was a knock on the door. She let out a breath before she retreated, moving towards the door and opening it. I could smell the scent of my daughter standing there, and the other scent of my son in her arms.

Irene had taken one for the team, caring for the newborn while I stayed with Judy in Eliza’s clinic. Of course, she’s had the help of my mother and Judy’s mother.

All I care about is the fact that my son is healthy. Eliza mentioned that he’s strong and she can sense how powerful he’s going to be… how powerful he already is.

“Dad…” Irene said softly after she exchanged a few words with Eliza at the doorway. She handed the baby to Eliza, and Eliza left the room, leaving us alone.

Irene approached me like she was approaching a rabid animal, and then she placed a hand on my shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze.

“How is she doing?” Irene asked, her eyes flickering to Judy’s face.

“No change,” I said, my voice strained from disuse.

“She’s been through a lot. Eliza said her body just needs to rest. She’s going to be okay. But Dad… my baby brother needs a name…” she reminded me. “Did you decide on one?”

I wasn’t deciding on a name alone… not without Judy. I know she had a name in mind she wanted to use, but nothing had been settled for sure. We weren’t expecting to have this baby so soon; we thought we had time.

“When Judy wakes up, she will name the baby,” I said, letting out a breath. “You should go. It’s getting late. I need you to go to Taylor and have him take over the office for a while. I won’t be leaving here until Judy is awake.”

I felt Irene’s eyes on me, and I knew what she was thinking, even more so when she spoke.

“You can’t be serious, Dad. You are a Lycan chairman… an Alpha… and a father. You can’t postpone your duties. She wouldn’t want this,” she scolded, her voice cracking at the end. “It’s not fair to Taylor, and we

can’t keep acting as Alpha while you sit here and stare at her while she’s sleeping. This isn’t healthy, and your baby boy needs you. Matt needs you and damn it, Dad… I need you. I’m not doing okay. I’m hurting. scared, and upset. I can’t keep doing this… I’m not this baby’s mother. I need you to step up.”

Without another word, she turned and stormed out of the room.

I watched her go; my heart was heavy in my chest because I knew she was right. I was putting everything on hold. Eliza is so sure that Judy will wake up soon enough and recover. But I wanted to be the first person she saw when she opened her eyes. I wanted to be here for my mate every step of the way.

But I also knew I had children and a pack to care for. Irene had been going through a lot these last few weeks. Someone she thought was her mate was ghosting her, and she was a mess over it. I knew she was trying to hide it, but I could see the pain in her eyes. she had no idea that Chuck was actually in our territory, captured.

I stood, about to go after her, but then I felt a hand wrap around mine; gentle and weak. Then, her voice hit me like a train..

“Gavin…?”

I blinked and whipped around to face Judy. Her eyes were open, and she was looking at me. She was actually looking at me.

“Judy?” I asked, my voice betraying my emotions.

“Where’s my baby…” she whispered, sounding utterly exhausted.

She lifted her head, her brows furrowed slightly as she winced. She was in pain. I put my hand on her shoulders, trying to get her to settle down and not move too quickly.

“Baby, you’ve been asleep for the last 24 hours. You need to take it easy. Let me get, Eliza.”

She didn’t argue with me, which was honestly surprising.

I didn’t waste any time. I rushed out of the room, nearly knocking into both Irene and Eliza. My heart broke when I saw the tears in Irene’s eyes, though she was startled to see me.

Before she could say anything, I turned to Eliza.

“She’s awake.”

Eliza gasped and rushed past me into the room. I met Irene’s eyes, and she wiped away a lingering tear.

“I’m sorry.” I told her. “You were right. I was being selfish. You didn’t deserve me shutting you out and sticking you with childcare duties. But I’m back now, and I won’t abandon you again.”

She stared at me for a moment longer.

“Are you just saying that because she’s awake?” Irene asked, her voice cracking slightly.

I shook my head.

“I was about to come after you, but she woke up before I could,” I explained. “Your words were enough to wake me out of my stupor. I’m so sorry.”

She sniffled and then stepped into my arms.

“I love you, Dad,” she whispered.

“I love you too, sweetheart,” I replied.

“You’ve been asleep for a while. We were starting to worry.” I heard Eliza saying to Judy.

I turned and walked back into the room with Irene trailing behind me.

Judy was sitting up; she looked a little better than she had a moment ago. She blinked a few times and looked around the room with a confused look on her face.

“I’ve been asleep the whole time?” She asked, “It didn’t feel like it was that long. I had the craziest dream…”

Her voice was raspy as she spoke, and Eliza was quick to bring a cup of water to her lips.

“Don’t strain yourself too much,” Eliza warned her. “Your body is still recovering, and you’re in resting mode. You’ve had all of us so scared.”

“I’m sorry.” Judy said softly. “I didn’t mean to worry anyone…”

“It’s not your fault,” Eliza told her, a soft smile on her lips. “Your family and friends will be so relieved to hear that you are awake, though.”

Judy’s eyes met mine, and I went to her without hesitation, my hands finding hers. They were starting to become warm and full of life again. My wolf was immediately reconnected with hers, and it felt so good to be around my mate who was fully awake and functional.

“Were you scared?” She asked, reaching up to touch the furrow between my brows. “I can sense your tension and fear.”

I nodded, leaning into her touch and finding comfort in it.

“I was,” I whispered. “You’d be disappointed to know that I let my duties go while I sat by your bedside. I’ve barely even held our son.”

Her eyes widened.

“What? Why? Is he okay??”
