“Daddy, why aren’t you saying anything? Didn’t you tell me on the way here that you had a ton to talk about with Mommy?” Oliver piped up, his voice slicing through the heavy quiet in the room.
Julian shot him a look, eyebrow raised. When had he ever said that?
Madeline glanced at Julian, her expression calm. “So, what did you want to talk to me about?”
Julian started to answer, but before he could get a word out, there were two firm knocks on the door.
Madeline looked toward it. “Come in.”
The door swung open and Helene appeared, moving slowly with someone helping her along. The mood in the room shifted in an instant. Nobody looked happy to see her.
Helene didn’t seem bothered at all. She smiled like nothing was wrong. “Ms. Monroe, sorry for dropping in. Julian, I actually have something I want to discuss with you. Can we talk alone for a minute?”
“I have nothing to say to you,” Julian replied, voice cold.
Helene bit her lip, looking small and desperate. “Julian, you haven’t talked to me in forever. I just want to have a conversation. We’re about to get engaged. There are things we should work out, right?”
She looked so pitiful, but she didn’t care if Madeline saw her at her lowest. Julian had been ignoring her for days now, and she was honestly scared. The engagement depended on Julian’s attitude, and right now it couldn’t be more obvious. He wouldn’t even speak to her, much less agree to marry her.
Just a few days ago, Julian had his team scrub the engagement news from the internet, but his stubborn grandfather put it all back up. Then Julian took it down again. Now the two of them were locked in a standoff and everyone in their social circle was talking about it.
Everyone could see Julian didn’t want to marry Helene. People were just waiting for her to make a fool of herself. Helene refused to let that happen, no matter how humiliating things got.
