Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 597

Maxwell rushed over to Claire, his voice tight with worry. “Miss, are you okay?”

The moment Claire saw him, relief flooded her. She knew she’d made it through the worst.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she reached for Maxwell. “Please, you have to help me… He was going to kill me, just to protect that imposter. Please, save me. If I really die, their plan will work. I’m my mother’s only child. I can’t die, I just can’t…”

The more she spoke, the more panicked she became until her words broke into sobs. Her beautiful face, now streaked with tears, made anyone want to protect her.

Maxwell looked down at her, his heart hardening against Julian and his men. How could they do this to a woman?

“You’re just making stuff up,” Miles interrupted, unable to listen anymore. “There is no plan. If we actually wanted you dead, you’d be gone already. You wouldn’t have made it till they got here.”

Julian had been rough, that much was true, but they’d kept a doctor close by. There was no way they’d let Claire die.

Claire looked so fragile, giant tears running down her cheeks. “If I hadn’t fought back with everything I had, I’d already be dead. And you didn’t know the Ballard family would come for me, so of course you weren’t in a rush. But Maxwell, you saw it yourself. If you’d been a second later, I’d be gone.”

“I know.” Maxwell’s eyes darkened. “You don’t need to say anything else. Someone, take hrt home.”

As Claire’s people came to help her up, Miles stepped in front of them, blocking their path. He looked at Julian, waiting for his answer. They wouldn’t let her go unless Julian agreed.

“Let her go,” Julian said, his voice cold and empty.

That was all Miles needed to hear. He stepped aside.

“And you expect me to buy that? That’s just your side of things.”

“If I really wanted her dead, she’d be gone by now. No one would ever find out.”

Julian didn’t mind being hated, but he refused to let the Ballard family blame Madeline. She was innocent, but her name kept getting dragged into this mess.

“Oh, really? Just like last night, when she almost died at your hands,” Maxwell shot back, his voice shaking with anger.

Julian’s brow furrowed. “Last night? What are you talking about?”

“The men who tried to kill her last night. That was you, wasn’t it?” It was obvious Maxwell now believed every word Claire had said.
