Julian let out a cold laugh. His face twisted with sarcasm. “We had nothing to do with it. I don’t know how she got hurt, and I have no idea what she’s told you.”

“Who else could it be?” Maxwell clearly trusted his own eyes more than anything Julian said.

“So she actually told you we sent people after her?”

“Yes.”

Julian’s smirk only grew. “If you insist on keeping a liar by your side, you’re in for a rough time.”

Maxwell’s frown deepened.

Julian didn’t wait for a reply. He turned to leave.

Helene was still huddled in the corner, trying to make herself invisible. Julian’s gaze flicked over, landing on her. She flinched, terrified he would lock her up again. Relief flooded her features and she scrambled up, darting out of the room.

Maxwell was still replaying Julian’s words in his mind when Miles passed by, unable to hold his tongue. “Maxwell, I’ve got to say, if we really had sent people after her last night, she never would have made it till morning.
