Lucy finally looked away, guiding Madeline inside.
“Are Noah and Oliver doing alright?”
“They’re great. If you want to see them, I can bring them over next time.”
Lucy managed a faint smile. “Why don’t you sit down for a bit? I’ll go ask Christian to come.”
Madeline nodded. “Thank you.”
Before long, Christian came downstairs. The second he spotted Madeline, his displeasure was impossible to miss, darkening his features.
Madeline stood up politely.
Lucy, noticing the tension, jumped in before Christian could speak. “Go ahead and sit. No need to be so formal.”
Christian took a seat, barely glancing at her, his voice stern. “Your eyes... you’ve recovered?”
Madeline pressed her lips together. “Yes. The bandages just came off a few days ago.”
Christian’s tone sharpened. “You left, and now you’ve come back. Why?”
“Before I answer that, can I ask you something?”
Christian didn’t reply, just narrowed his eyes.
Madeline met his gaze. “Would you really let me keep Noah and Oliver with me forever?”
Christian’s expression darkened, the answer written all over his face. Of course not.
He might have let her take the kids for a year or two, but no way would the Grayson children stay away from the family forever. Sooner or later, he’d bring them back. Maybe he’d even ask Julian to marry someone else, have her become their new mother.
Madeline’s voice was steady. “You already have your answer. That’s why I came back. Julian and I have children together. We have feelings for each other. Our families are tied together, and neither side will ever give up those boys. The only way this works is if Julian and I are together.”
She finished with a gentle, honest smile.
Christian’s mouth set in a hard line. “Because of what your mother did, I will never allow you and Julian to be together.”
Madeline’s tone was even. “Besides that, do you have any other reasons?”
