“That car crash all those years ago wasn’t an accident. Someone planned it.”
Christian’s eyes flashed as he looked at Madeline. “You’re saying this for your mother’s sake, aren’t you?”
She lowered her gaze, shaking her head slightly. “This isn’t something I’d dare make up. There’s too much at stake. I brought evidence—why don’t you check it first?”
With a wary look, Christian took the manila envelope she handed over. He slid out a few photos of a villa, some screenshots of bank transfers, and a USB drive.
“What are you trying to show me?”
Madeline pointed to one of the photos. “Remember Tony, the driver in the crash with Brian? This is the villa where his wife and child live now.”
Christian squinted. “You’re suggesting Tony was bribed to cause the crash?”
“That’s it. Otherwise, how could his family afford a place like this after he died? And look—these transfers weren’t small. Tony’s wife and brother received money over a long period.”
Christian’s face tightened as it hit him. She was telling him Tony had been paid off to kill Brian.
He skimmed the sheets, then frowned. “But these transfers happened a year after Brian’s death. Isn’t it possible they found another way to make the money?”
Madeline’s nod was calm and knowing. “That’s exactly how smart the person behind this was. After the police closed the case as an accident, they waited a year. Then, using different anonymous accounts, they paid Tony’s family in small amounts. Even if someone tracked the money, there would be nothing obvious to connect. Even if they did find it, it’s not exactly proof.”
Christian’s eyes darkened. “And why should I just believe you? Anyone can fake evidence. I knew Tony. He worked for our family most of his life. We treated him well. He wouldn’t do something like this.”
“I get why you’re skeptical. If I were in your position, I’d doubt me too. So please, look at what’s on this USB drive.”
She spotted a laptop on the desk, grabbed it, and plugged in the drive.
“I know I started investigating for my own reasons. You blamed my mother, banned Julian and me from being together. If this isn’t cleared up, we’ll never have a future. But honestly, that’s not the most important part anymore. Brian’s murderer is still at large. And Christian, remember Julian’s car accident not long ago? What if that wasn’t just some random bad luck?”
Christian’s head whipped toward her, his hands shaking on his cane. “They killed my son with a car crash… and now they want to do the same to my grandson?”
Madeline’s lips pressed into a line. “If we don’t find who did this, they’ll try again. I’m sure of it.”
Christian breathed in, deep and ragged. “Do you have any idea who it might be?”
“The Grayson family is huge. There are plenty of people who’d want to see you fall. I can’t be sure… but if both Brian and Julian were gone, there’s one person who stands to gain the most.”
Christian’s frown deepened. “You’re talking about Matthew.”
