Even if Julian was angry with her, there was no way he’d just walk away from his children.
Madeline tried to keep her expression calm. “Julian, what’s going on with you?”
Julian’s gaze lingered on her face, unreadable and cold. He arched an eyebrow, his voice dropping low. “Miss, do we know each other?”
He’d had plenty of women try to get close to him, but this was a first—a woman bringing along kids.
Julian shook his head and let out a dry laugh. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
Madeline pressed her lips together. “You seriously don’t remember me?”
“I never knew you, so there’s nothing to forget,” Julian replied, voice like ice.
Madeline’s words tangled up in her throat. After a moment, she pulled Noah and Oliver closer. “Fine, you want to say you don’t know me? What about your sons then? You’re saying you don’t even know them?”
“I don’t have any sons.”
That hit Madeline so hard she almost couldn’t breathe.
“Are you serious? Is this some kind of sick prank? Do we need to pull a DNA test right here?” Her voice shook, her patience slipping.
Julian glanced at her, utterly indifferent. “Not interested.”
Now, even Madeline had to admit something was seriously wrong. She looked over at Josh and Brady, hoping for a lifeline.
Both men quickly pressed their hands together in an apologetic gesture and mouthed Sorry, eyes pleading, We’ll explain later.
Madeline sucked in a shaky breath and tried to swallow down the panic.
Noah and Oliver just stood there, still and uncertain, caught off guard.
Oliver’s bottom lip trembled. “Daddy, you really don’t know us?”
Noah’s eyes were big with confusion. “Daddy, I’m Noah. That’s Oliver. We’re your sons.”
“You’ve got the wrong person.” Julian’s eyes moved past the kids, barely pausing on Madeline’s face before turning away.
He walked off without another word.
Madeline felt like the warmth in the room had vanished. Even with the heat up high, there was an icy chill settling around her.
