James’s brow was pinched with worry. He’d heard Julian had lost his memory, and now he knew for sure.
Julian had forgotten Madeline. Forgotten her completely, as if she’d never existed.
James took a couple of steps closer and looked at Madeline. “Are you okay?”
Madeline lowered her eyes, hiding the flicker of pain inside. “I’m fine.”
“Mommy, what’s wrong with Daddy?” Noah’s big eyes glistened with fear.
“Mommy, why doesn’t Daddy recognize us?” Oliver tugged at her sleeve, looking totally lost.
Madeline knelt down in front of them, feeling her chest tighten. “I don’t know what’s happening either, sweethearts. Mommy will figure it out.”
“Madeline?” Brady’s voice cut in as he walked up.
She glanced over at Brady and Josh. “Can one of you please explain what happened?”
Josh let out a heavy sigh and shook his head. “It’s a long story.”
“Give me the highlights, then.”
“He lost his memory. He doesn’t remember the last few years.”
“Amnesia?” Madeline echoed, even though a part of her had already guessed it. Still, hearing it out loud made the truth settle uncomfortably in her chest.
How could something like this just happen out of nowhere?
“What happened this year? Anything unusual?”
Brady spoke quietly. “We’re not exactly sure. After you left, Miles said Julian woke up and tried to leave, but Christian insisted he stay. Julian got into a fight with the bodyguards, then passed out. When he woke up, he couldn’t remember a lot of things.”
“Was he hurt in the fight?”
“No, not really. You know how Julian is. He can handle himself, and the bodyguards would never dare go that far. No one would have risked hurting him like that, let alone causing amnesia.”
“So he just... forgot everything for no reason?” Madeline pressed her lips together, her anxiety growing.
“That’s right,” Josh answered softly.
He exhaled and turned to her. “Madeline, don’t be mad at Julian. Christian gave strict orders not to mention you. We were all afraid if Julian remembered you and you weren’t around, it’d destroy him. So... no one brought you up at all.”
“No wonder,” Madeline murmured.
No wonder Julian hadn’t looked for her or the kids, no wonder Christian hadn’t tried to stop her from leaving with the children.
Christian must have wanted her erased from Julian’s world, hoping he’d find a new wife while Madeline faded into the background. Then, when it was all too late to change things, they’d tell Julian about his kids... and try to take them away.
Madeline forced a smile, more bitter than amused. Christian really thought everything through.
But Julian’s amnesia still made no sense.
Just then, Brenda arrived, heels clicking hard against the floor as she stormed over. “Madeline, I just saw Julian with another woman—”
She slowed as she caught the look on Madeline’s face. Her voice softened. “You saw them, too?”
Madeline’s lips pressed together, a deep furrow between her brows. “He told me he doesn’t have a wife or kids.” She tried to laugh, but it came out hollow.
“What is wrong with him?”
“He has amnesia. It’s not his fault.” Madeline tried to sound casual, but the heartbreak in her eyes gave her away.
“Wait, amnesia?” Brenda looked around, clearly baffled.
She’d only just found out—Madeline hadn’t been around the Capital this year, and neither had Julian.
Right then, Mrs. Palmer appeared, gently escorted by Andrew. Helene was with them, glaring at Madeline with pure venom.
It had been a year since they’d last seen each other. Madeline was as beautiful as ever, maybe even more so.
Helene, on the other hand, looked pale and drained. Andrew had married her for money, but made no secret of his disdain. She looked even more bitter and broken than before.
Madeline didn’t spare her a glance. Today wasn’t about old grudges—she was here for Mrs. Palmer’s birthday.
Madeline smiled, brushing her worries aside for now. “Happy birthday, Mrs. Palmer. It’s an honor to be here. I hope you have a wonderful evening.”
