Everyone nearby instinctively lowered their heads, not daring to look at the man who carried such an air of authority.
He walked straight ahead, easy but commanding, and the senior team snapped into formation behind him. Together, they swept into the lobby of Grayson Enterprises, bringing with them a chill that seemed to suck the air out of the room.
Earlier that day, Julian had toured the company with his team. He spotted a string of problems, but none worse than the mess Lincoln was managing.
Miles now stood just behind Julian, feeling the cold roll right off him even from a few steps away.
Julian was making for the elevator but suddenly stopped short. The muscles along his jaw visibly tightened.
Miles frowned up at him, confused. He followed Julian’s gaze and spotted two people caught in a tense conversation across the way.
Madeline and Lincoln.
Madeline’s eyes were icy and sharp. “You really think it’s up to you if Grayson Enterprises ends up in Julian’s hands?”
That jab hit Lincoln where it hurt. He let out a laugh but there was no humor in it. “It’s not up to me, sure. But what do you say—we make a bet?”
Madeline gave him a bored little smile. “A bet? Let me guess. You want to bet you’ll become the next CEO? If I remember, when Julian and Christian fell out last year, you all got your shot. Funny thing, though. Even after Julian walked away, you still couldn’t grab the title… or keep it.”
That was always a raw nerve with Lincoln and everyone knew it. The moment Madeline brought it up, a shadow fell over Lincoln’s face, his expression turning thunderous.
He’d never once thought Julian was better than him. Christian had always picked favorites—first Brian, then after Brian died, Julian.
If Christian hadn’t constantly played favorites, Lincoln would have had every right to fight for the heir’s spot.
Now even a woman Julian had left behind looked down on him.
A mean glint appeared in Lincoln’s eyes. He suddenly lunged forward and grabbed Madeline’s wrist, his knuckles turning white. “Say that again.”
Madeline’s gaze sharpened. For a second, she clocked Julian and his group approaching. She didn’t yank her hand free just yet, but dropped her eyes to Lincoln’s grip, her expression frosty.
Then she tilted her chin up, a cool smile tugging at her lips, her voice light but cutting. “And if I do? Tell me, Lincoln, are you so desperate for validation you have to keep hassling me for attention? Or do you think sleeping with Julian’s wife proves you’ve won? Jealousy looks pathetic on you.”
In just a few words, she stripped Lincoln’s bitterness bare.
He clenched his jaw so tight his face looked carved from stone, furious heat blazing in his eyes.
