She’d almost kicked that woman out herself. Honestly, how could she have been so oblivious?
Lincoln held his stomach, gasping out, “Julian…”
Miles bent down and helped Madeline up. Julian’s eyes landed on Madeline’s wrist, red from being grabbed. Anger flickered in his gaze, growing darker by the second.
“Pack your things and get out of Grayson Enterprises.”
“Julian, wait…”
Lincoln’s voice shook. He started after them, but Miles blocked his way.
“Don’t move,” Miles warned, his tone final.
Nobody else had time to react before Julian leaned down, scooped Madeline effortlessly into his arms, and carried her toward the elevator. All eyes in the lobby watched as the doors slid shut.
Inside his office, Julian set Madeline gently on the sofa. His face was tight with rage.
Madeline rubbed her aching wrist, blinking up at him, trying to read his expression.
Julian looked at her wrist again and couldn’t bring himself to just ignore it. He stepped away, pulling out his phone.
Madeline listened. It sounded like he was calling his secretary for some ointment or bruise cream.
After hanging up, Julian’s eyes fixed on her.
“You did that on purpose.”
Madeline gave him a quiet smile. “Did what?”
“You provoked Lincoln. You wanted to see how far I’d go for you, didn’t you?”
Her eyes sparkled. She just laughed, not quite confirming, not quite denying.
The secretary arrived quickly with the ointment. Julian took Madeline’s hand, not bothering to hide his agitation. His touch was anything but gentle.
“Hey, easy! That actually hurts,” Madeline protested, wincing.
Julian shot her a dry, cold look. “I thought nothing could hurt you.”
She eyed him with a little tilt of her head. “Am I too scheming?”
“Are you and Lincoln enemies or something?”
“If you aren’t, you wouldn’t go to this trouble to set him up,” he added, watching her.
Madeline shook her head. “No, we’re not. I just… wanted to see where I stand with you, that’s all.”
“So, you provoked him in front of everyone, let him lose his cool so I’d have an excuse to get rid of him… and all the while, you’re testing me, too. Seeing if I’ll take your side no matter what. Am I right?”
She didn’t deny it.
Julian asked, “What if I hadn’t played along?”
She smiled a little. “You would have anyway. I bet you’ve been waiting for a reason to fire Lincoln for ages. You just needed the right excuse. Now you have one. He’s useless, he’s scheming. Why keep someone like that around and feed him for nothing?”
Julian let go of her hand, a reluctant smile pulling at his lips. “Anything else you want to confess?”
Madeline’s tone softened. “You know you have too many admirers, right? All those women downstairs, waiting for you. You went out of your way to help me. They all saw it.”
Julian looked at her with a tiny grin, finally letting out a quiet laugh. He remembered, just then, why he’d fallen so hard for her. Why he’d risk it all.
She was so clever, sometimes too clever for her own good.
Just from a few passing conversations, she’d planned the perfect trap, catching everyone off guard.
She knew Lincoln was impulsive and immature, so she’d egged him on in public, making him say things he couldn’t take back. If anyone asked about it later, no one could blame Julian—it was all Lincoln’s fault.
And all those women in the lobby trying to win his attention? By defending Madeline so openly, Julian had sent a clear message. He was taken. Don’t waste your time.
Maybe she was testing his heart. Maybe she was just using his feelings to fix his problems. And if she was being honest, maybe she just wanted to clear out a few rivals of her own.
