Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 729

Why were they expected to just suffer in silence and take it? What made them any less than Jane and her daughter?

“That’s not it, Ms. Monroe, you misunderstood me, I never meant it that way.”

She didn’t even hesitate. “No, that’s exactly what you meant.”

Maybe he didn’t even see it himself. Jane and Alianna always made themselves out to be victims. After a while, everyone just naturally took their side, feeling sorry for them. Anyone who dared to disagree with them suddenly looked like the villain, no matter what the real story was.

It was like their weakness was their secret weapon, and no one seemed to realize it.

If even someone on the outside was ready to take Jane and Alianna’s side, what about Ray? He didn’t stand a chance at being impartial.

Luke rolled his eyes. “Madeline, don’t even talk to him. Let me teach him a lesson and send him packing.”

Even Luke was losing patience with all that talk.

I glanced back and nodded at Zack, then pushed open the car door and stepped out. “Luke, just let him go.”

He frowned. “You’re really going with him?”

I gave a slight smirk. “If I don’t, Ray’s going to show up at my place asking questions anyway. Isn’t that right, Zack?”

Zack gave a polite nod. “Please, Ms. Monroe, this way.”

Luke tried again. “I’ll come with you.”

I shook my head and raised my hand. “No need, I’ll handle this myself. Let’s get it over with.”

Riding in Zack’s car, I stared out the window in silence. Not a word, not a single expression on my face. The world flew by and I let it, refusing to break the quiet.

I didn’t want to talk to Ray, not when I knew he’d be standing up for Jane and Alianna again. But he always did. He’d never even try to hide it.

After a while, we drove past a wide street and onto a lane bordered by trees. The place was remote, but when the car stopped, it was in front of the kind of mansion you only saw in magazines—huge, imposing, impossible to ignore.

Someone here clearly liked plants. Flowers spilled out everywhere, rare ones, bright and extravagant, turning the yard into something out of a dream.

But that baby, the one he and Shelly once had, had been gone a long time. Shelly made sure of that.

“Dad, I’m scared…”

Alianna’s voice was so soft it almost vanished, but Ray heard it. The way she called him “Dad” hit him straight in the heart.

He looked at Alianna with a tenderness he didn’t bother hiding.

Alianna wasn’t his by blood, but he protected her with everything he had—everything he’d ever wanted to give a daughter.

Now she was hurt, and he was never going to just let it go.

I let my eyes flick over Alianna’s pale face. Even while she cried, she watched me, not missing a thing.

Jane did the same. She wiped her cheeks and stood, then dropped to her knees on the polished floor right in front of me.

“Madeline, I’m begging you, please let Alianna go. She’s young and doesn’t know any better. She made you angry, that’s on her, and honestly it’s my fault for not raising her right. If you’re mad, be mad at me. If you want to hurt someone, hurt me, just don’t take it out on her. Please, I’m begging you, just let her go. Let her be.”
