Julian’s eyes sparkled, a hint of a smile playing in their depths.
She really was smart—he had to give her that.
Madeline looked up and caught him grinning at her. She batted her lashes, refusing to look away. “What’s with that look? Do I seem too wicked, or are you just annoyed that I meddled?”
“He might be an idiot, but he’ll catch on eventually. Aren’t you worried he’ll want payback?”
Madeline propped her chin on her hand. “Payback, huh? Would you even let him get close enough to try?”
Julian’s lips curled slightly. “Just take care of yourself.”
She gave a knowing nod.
Suddenly, her phone rang, cutting through the calm in the office. She glanced at the screen—Ray again. Relentless. Madeline let the call ring out.
“I’ve got to go. Don’t want to take up any more of your time.”
She’d only come to check her suspicions, but it turned out she’d gotten it wrong. He hadn’t remembered her at all.
A moment later, Julian caught her hand and stood. “It’s time for dinner. Come eat with me.”
Madeline arched a brow. “Just the two of us?”
“Is that a problem?”
She glanced down at where his hand circled her wrist and let out a soft laugh. “So what am I to you now?”
Julian seemed in good spirits. “A mysterious stranger who almost made me bankrupt.”
She rolled his words over in her mind, then grinned, looping her arms around his neck with a mischievous, feline grace. “What, do you regret what you did back then?”
He didn’t push her away, just slipped his hands around her waist. She was soft, slender, her perfume cold and faint, drawing him closer.
“Once I’ve given something, there’s no taking it back.”
Madeline chuckled. “Even if you regret it, there’s nothing you can do.”
“Do you know what Christian always nags me about?” he asked.
“Tell me.”
“‘Women are a man’s weakness. Don’t get hooked, don’t get obsessed.’ So, how obsessed do you think I was with you before?”
Madeline smiled quietly. “Maybe you’ll only find out when you finally remember everything.”
Julian let out a low laugh. His eyes lingered on her lips, and the urge to kiss her hit hard.
She saw the look in his eyes, tightened her hold on his neck, and as Julian leaned in, she pressed her lips to his in a soft, quick kiss.
She was about to pull away when he lowered his head, deepening the kiss into something hot and hungry.
His mind might not remember her, but his body did—every time he saw her, he wanted to get close, to touch, to kiss her. He’d never felt this way about another woman, only her.
“Boss…”
The office door hadn’t closed, and a call had come in. Miles walked in without knocking.
Madeline jumped back, cheeks burning so hot she felt like her skin would melt.
A man jumped out and strode toward her.
“Ms. Monroe, our boss would like to see you. Please come with us.”
She fixed him with a frosty look. “Ray sent you?”
They’d only met once in the Capital, but she hadn’t forgotten his face—Ray’s right-hand man, Zack.
He nodded, still respectful. “I see you remember me, Ms. Monroe.”
Madeline leaned her elbow against the window, her eyes cool. “And if I refuse?”
“Then, please, don’t blame us for getting rough.”
Madeline let out a chilly smirk. “You want to start trouble at the Grayson gate? You sure you’re up for that, Luke?”
Zack sensed a threat. He turned, and the next second, a blur shot past. Suddenly, he was face-down on the ground, his arms locked tightly behind him.
Luke grinned, wild and triumphant. “They should know better.”
Zack tried to get up, but Luke kept him pinned. He could only shout at Madeline, “Ms. Monroe, our boss just wants to talk and handle things peacefully. If you keep this up, the next visit won’t be so friendly.”
Madeline scoffed. “He cares that much about them, about that woman and her daughter? What about my mom—does she mean anything at all to him?”
Anger flared in her chest for her mother’s sake.
“Jane saved his life, and Alianna has always respected him—calls him her father. They care for each other, Ms. Monroe. If you and your mother would just give in sometimes, things wouldn’t be so difficult.”
An icy edge sharpened Madeline’s gaze. She looked straight at him. “So we’re just supposed to put up and shut up, is that it?”
