Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 732

Jane and Alianna couldn’t hide the satisfaction in their eyes. This was exactly what they’d been working toward all along.

Madeline stared back at Ray. There wasn’t a single trace of fear in her eyes.

Ray lifted his hand and Zack started toward Madeline with two men. He looked uneasy. “Sir, maybe you should think this through. No matter what, Ms. Monroe is the madam’s daughter. You—”

“I’ve already tolerated her again and again for Shelly’s sake. How much more do you expect from me?”

“But…” Zack hesitated, glancing at Madeline. If Ray actually hurt her, Mrs. Monroe would never let it slide.

Ray’s cold stare cut him off. Zack fell silent.

Jane shot Alianna a look. Alianna stepped forward, pretending to plead. “Dad, please, let’s just leave it. I don’t think Madeline meant anything by it. I’ll be fine, really. A little upset is nothing.”

“You’re my daughter. Why should you have to be bullied by someone else’s child?”

Jane’s eyes sparkled with a secret satisfaction. Ray’s words, “someone else’s child,” made it clear he would never see Madeline as his own.

He might have loved Shelly, but he couldn’t let go of the fact she’d ended his child and had Madeline with another man. If Shelly and Madeline had gone along with him, maybe he’d have cared for her too, but they insisted on going against him. All that was left now was anger and resentment.

“Zack.”

“Ms. Monroe, I’m sorry.” Zack squared his shoulders, moving closer. He was expecting a fight, but Madeline surprised him. She was perfectly calm.

Thirteen steps wasn’t a long staircase, but standing at the top, it felt a lot higher than it looked.

Zack still hesitated. He tried one last time, his voice low. “Ms. Monroe, please just apologize. Go along with it for now. The sir doesn’t really want to hurt you, he just loses his temper. If you let it go, it’ll all blow over.”

Madeline glanced down the steps. Her voice was soft. “When they picked a fight with my mother, did apologizing ever change anything for her?”

Zack pressed his lips together, unable to answer. Nobody in this house had ever seen Mrs. Monroe back down.

Madeline sighed quietly and mumbled to herself, “Does he even love my mother at all?”

Zack’s look turned uncomfortable. He thought for a moment. “Of course. The sir truly loves Mrs. Monroe, more than anyone.”

He paused, but everyone knew there was more to it than that. Ray loved Shelly, sure, but he also resented her. The child she’d lost was a scar that never healed.
