“Yes.”
Last night, he couldn’t settle down or get anything done. In the end, he went to check the security footage to get to the bottom of what really happened.
Sure enough, Alianna had picked a fight with Madeline. She was the one who tried to frame her from the start.
“Alright, then ask someone to send me the video.” Madeline hadn’t planned to dwell on it, but since Julian offered, there was no harm in having it on hand.
“Okay.” Julian kept holding the ice pack against her ankle as he spoke. “I’ll let her go. There’s no reason to keep her around any longer.”
Madeline leaned back and let out a small laugh. “But she’s such a gorgeous secretary. Why fire her? Keep her. Let her stick around just to call your name… Julian, Julian, Julian…”
She mimicked a sweet falsetto, teasing him on purpose.
Julian raised his eyes and looked right at her.
For a second, the intensity of his gaze caught her off guard.
No way. Is he really upset?
She remembered, he wasn’t the same Julian as before. Right now, to him, she was just a stranger he’d only known for a day or two.
But Madeline couldn’t help but smile and keep egging him on. “You’re not mad about something that silly, are you, Julian?”
Julian laughed, a low sound. Alianna used to call his name like that sometimes when nobody was around, but he never cared about her. He certainly didn’t care about what people called him. Anyone could call him anything, it made no difference.
But right now, hearing Madeline say his name like that, he realized he actually liked the sound of it.
“Say it again.”
“Huh?”
She hesitated, then put on a flirty voice. “Oh… Julian… Mr. Handsome?”
Somehow, that nickname came out extra sweet in Madeline’s gentle voice, and suddenly the air between them felt a bit electric.
“Call me that from now on.”
Madeline gave him a look. “Are you serious? That’s your thing?”
He just grinned. “You’re my thing.”
Madeline frowned. “No way, it’s too cringey.”
“Then what did you used to call me?” Julian’s eyes softened, as if this answer meant more to him than he wanted to admit.
“Julian.”
He looked at her for a beat. “That’s it?”
“Is that answer good enough?”
Madeline coughed, trying to play it cool. “Yeah. More than enough…”
Julian leaned in closer, lips nearly touching hers, when out of nowhere, someone nearby cleared their throat.
Madeline immediately squirmed away and got to her feet. She glanced up to see Shelly coming out of the kitchen.
“Heh… Mom, is dinner ready?”
Shelly gave Julian a curt glance. Madeline’s injury today was partly Julian’s fault, and whether he’d lost his memory didn’t matter much in her book.
“Julian, this is my mother.”
Julian immediately stood and nodded politely. “Auntie.”
Shelly came over and led Madeline to her side, keeping her expression stern. “Come eat with me.”
Madeline nodded obediently. “Okay. Julian, dinner time.”
Shelly frowned. “Did I invite him?”
Madeline blinked at her mom, still confused. “Mom?”
