The cold look on Julian’s handsome face hardened in an instant.
He stood up.
Madeline’s eyes narrowed, and she reached out, giving Alianna’s body a slight push.
Instead of falling into Julian’s arms as she’d intended, Alianna hit the floor with a dull thud.
The floor was covered with a thick carpet, but the muffled sound still suggested it hurt.
Madeline calmly drew her hand back.
Did she think I wasn’t even here?
“Alianna!” Jane shrieked, rushing to cradle her daughter’s limp body.
“Alianna, what’s wrong?”
“Alianna? Are you okay? Alianna! Madeline, Alianna has already fainted. Why would you push her? You’ve gone too far!”
Madeline chuckled softly. “She fainted, but she made sure to pick a direction first?”
Jane ground her teeth.
Outside, Ray held Shelly in a tight embrace, his expression dark and cold. “I don’t agree to a divorce. You can forget about leaving me for the rest of your life.”
Shelly tried to push him away, but he was too strong. She was forced to let him hold her, her eyes filled with scorn. “Ray, I’m so tired… I’m begging you, please let me go…”
Ray’s jaw tightened. “I know you’re just angry. You’re angry that I hurt Madeline. It won’t happen again. Forgive me this one time.”
Shelly’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Is that all it is? Ray, we’ve been tangled up for almost thirty years. Being with you… I’m just so exhausted. I used to be afraid of you because I couldn’t fight you. The moment I made you angry, you would lock me up.”
Ray’s lips thinned. “That was because you were trying to leave me. It was just a small punishment.”
The scorn in Shelly’s eyes deepened. “You know I don’t love you. I had someone I loved. Ray, just because you love me, do you have the right to imprison me, to possess me, to force me to have your child? Am I just your personal property?”
One of Shelly’s words must have struck a nerve. The look in Ray’s eyes shifted, and a vein pulsed on his forehead.
“You are my wife, Shelly. I love you, and I will never allow you to leave me. Even in death, you will die with me.”
Tears slid silently down her cheeks.
