Brody was kneeling over her, his face flushed and his eyes dark with a mess of emotions. He grabbed her chin, holding her firmly, looking right into her red, tear-filled eyes. There was anger in them, sure, but also a deep hurt and a kind of despair that made it hard to breathe.
“Nelly,” he said, his voice rough and quiet, “is there really no way back for us?”
Why did everything have to fall apart like this? Was starting over really that impossible?
Nelly swallowed, a little scared, but she kept her voice steady. “Brody, you’re ridiculous.” She gritted her teeth, forcing the words out.

Brody reacted instantly. He shoved Nelly aside and bolted for the door.

It wasn’t long before Nelly and Brody found themselves at the police station.

Brody didn’t believe it either. He jumped up and stepped in front of the officer. “Officer, look, this must be a misunderstanding. My wife’s upset today. Can’t we just handle this ourselves tomorrow…”
“I’m sorry, but since a report has been filed, we need to get everyone’s statements and check the facts. If it turns out someone was harmed, there will be charges.”
“Charges? Are you saying I’ll go to jail?” Sheila’s hands shook as she backed away, half-hiding behind Brody.
“Brody, I didn’t do anything. You know I wouldn’t. I would never hurt Carrie…”
Brody hesitated, his expression flickering with doubt. Nelly had said before that Sheila was a danger to Carrie. Even the hospital’s psychologist had mentioned that Carrie stayed calm when strangers weren’t around…
