Rudy didn’t listen to her at all. He ignored Britney and went to see Nancy himself.
Britney never expected him to be so reckless. She’d just wanted Nancy out of the way for a day, nothing more. Now Rudy had gone and messed everything up.
Afterward, Britney couldn’t help but wonder if Rudy was catching feelings for Nancy. Women’s intuition is rarely wrong, and even though Rudy wouldn’t admit it, deep down he knew it too.
When Nancy was finally released, Rudy was there, close enough to stop her from getting to the press conference if he really wanted to. He had options. But he let her go. He just couldn’t bring himself to hold her back.
There was something about the way Nancy had pleaded with him. It actually got to him, made him hesitate for the first time. Suddenly, the idea of disappointing her felt unbearable.
That day, Nancy walked the runway like she was born to do it, and Rudy watched her from the crowd, trying to blend into the shadows. She looked even more stunning than he remembered. He’d always thought that an innocent girl like Nancy needed a little darkness in her story to really shine. But now, seeing her in the spotlight, smiling so brightly, he realized she was already dazzling on her own.
Rudy started to think maybe he’d lost his mind. How could he fall for someone he was supposed to control?
“It wasn’t Britney’s fault,” he said, forcing a bitter smile as he bowed his head and offered Nicholas the coffee again. “It was all on me.”
Nicholas still didn’t take the cup. “If you know it’s you, then you should go to visit Michael yourself and accept your punishment. What do you expect me to do?”
“Nicholas, please… If you speak up for us, Dad might go easier,” Britney said softly, picking up on his hesitation.
Rudy jumped in, “I don’t care about the punishment, but we can’t let Felix get too cocky. When Christopher was in charge, he nearly took all your shares…”
“That’s enough.” Nicholas cut Rudy off, his voice cold and sharp. He didn’t want to listen to any more of Rudy’s attempts to stir things up. “Get out.”
