When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 348

Every morning, Garth had the same question for his mom. “Mom, when are you going to give me a little sister?”

Mamie never knew how to answer him. Those wide, innocent eyes made it impossible to even joke about it.

“Garth, do you think you’re not getting enough homework lately? Maybe I should ask your teacher to give you some extra assignments.” She tried to change the subject.

Immediately, Garth’s lips quivered. “I’m going to do my homework now.” He shuffled away.

He stopped at the doorway and turned back, “Mom, I’m really good, you know. Can you tell Dad to stop being so strict with me?”

Mamie couldn’t help but smile at that. She glanced over at Scott. “He’s a good kid, and he’s only in first grade. He doesn’t need so much homework.”

Honestly, she thought school these days was way too intense. First graders were learning so much already. It just felt overwhelming.

Scott gave Garth a look that said everything. Even without a word, Garth knew his dad was thinking, You might have Mom on your side, but I’m still watching you.

Garth took the hint and disappeared into his room, his chubby little body moving as fast as it could.

After he left, Scott broke the silence. “That kid is way too clever for his age. Sometimes he’s a real handful. If he brings up stuff like that again, you don’t have to be so nice about it.”

Mamie just looked at him, not sure what to say.

Scott’s expression softened a bit. “Don’t worry. Even if you’re tough with him, he’ll always love you.”

Mamie suddenly remembered Garth’s question from earlier. Her cheeks warmed.

“I’m going to wash up,” she mumbled.

Scott watched her, a subtle smile playing at his lips. He knew she still needed time to get used to everything. He had to be patient.

These days, Mamie always tried to go to bed before Scott. She’d pretend to be asleep whenever he came in, just in case he tried to bring up having another baby.
