"Let's talk to her about a picture together when we go upstairs later."
"Yes, yes, yes!"
Voices from the chattering crowds, bursting with excitement as they wrestled with one another to look up.
Emily and her cousin Selena looked at each other. There must be somebody famous in the salon for everyone had whipped out their phones as if they were hoping for a chance to take a picture.
Having worked with singers and film stars before during her brief tenure at the entertainment department, Emily hardly felt any enthusiasm especially as the maturity that came with her age had long caused her to leave behind what infatuation she once had for the craze of this sort. But a curious Selena had gone up to the crowd to find out about this mysterious VIP.
"A female!" answered a male hairstylist excitedly.
"Forget it!" Selena' s interest deflated the moment she heard that. Shrugging, she said, "I thought I might get an autograph if it was a male film star. But a female? Forget it!"
Emily shook her head with evident exasperation, “How old are you? You should have outgrown the habit of chasing movie stars already!"
Selena spread out her arms and said confidently, "This has nothing to do about age. Even old wives craze after young and attractive film stars these days!"
All right. You win! Emily decided to just simply shut up.
It was just a simple trim that hardly took long. But Selena's hairdo took a longer time. This was not helped by the fact that she trotted off to the bathroom halfway, only to vanish and Emily had to go look for her.
The bathroom was on the second floor and to no surprise, there she was, leaning by the door and talking to her boyfriend on the phone when Emily finally found her. From her expression and gesticulation, Emily reckoned that Selena must be quarreling with him.
Selena caught sight of her coming up and sticking out a tongue like a little girl being caught in her mischief, she hastily ended the call.
No stranger to her shenanigans, Emily poked at her forehead sternly like how an elder sister would. "How are things with you and your boyfriend, Selena?"
"He said he wants to marry me!" said Selena, who, just a second ago, was sourly in a tiff with her beloved, and now as shy and embarrassed as a girl who had just received her first flower. She groped at her cell phone gingerly, "But I'm not sure if I should accept his proposal or not."
Emily couldn't help but chuckle. "You guys are still young, don't worry. You've just graduated and only just recently began working, maybe it’s good to give your career a go for now. Especially for boys; they need to season a bit before they can start thinking about carrying the responsibilities of a family man. But if you’ re both serious about it, you can start by bringing him to see Uncle and Aunt during New Year!"
An abashed Selena quickly shook her head and grumbled, "All right, Sister. I’m not a kid now; I know what to do! Don’t worry about me! Worry about yourself!"
"What's there for me to worry about?" Emily blinked her eyes with a puzzled look on her face.
"You and your husband, of course!" Selena blurted quickly.
Emily was surprised. "Us?"
"Yes, your agreement with him!" Selena took her arm quickly and shook it furiously like a worried little girl, "You had an agreement with him, remember? Four years! There's only one more month left, remember?"
