My mom was in bad shape. When I rushed to the hospital the next day, the doctor told me that if she could wake up from her coma, it would be the best outcome.
For the next few days, I was running around between work and the hospital. It was the first time I truly felt the harshness of life.
"Is Dr. Russel really quitting?"
"Why would he quit? What a shame!"
"I'm not sure; I just heard he's already handed in his resignation."
I overheard a few nurses gossiping on my way to my mom's ward.
I couldn't help but slow down. I hadn't seen Russel much these days. He'd come to see my mom a few times, but only during his working hours.
Was he really quitting?
As soon as I got to the ward, I immediately called Russel.
"Russel, are you quitting?" I asked as soon as the call connected.
"Yes, I'm going through the resignation process. I'll be working at my family's business next." Russel answered softly, "Don't worry, I'm fine."
I rubbed my forehead helplessly. I knew that in a past life, Russel had given up his career as a doctor for love and taken over his family business.
As we were talking, Russel appeared at the door of the ward. He must have been off work already. He was wearing a beige sweater, looking warm.
"Why are you here?" I quickly hung up the phone.
"Just came to see you. Sorry, I haven't been taking care of you properly recently." Russel came over and gently touched my head, "You look worn out. Are you tired?"
I was indeed tired. My dad couldn't participate in the company's affairs before he retired, so I had to take on more. I wasn't familiar with everything about the company. Just dealing with the top management made me feel exhausted.
Because of a lack of sleep at night and a bad diet during the day, the weight I had finally gained was gone in an instant.
I forced a smile, "I'm trying to familiarize myself with the company's business as fast as I can. Now that my mom is like this, I have to learn to take responsibility."
Russel's eyes were filled with deep concern. It made my heart flutter.
The more tired I was, the more I wished someone would care for me. I tried to show strength, not wanting the company's top management and shareholders to see my vulnerability, but I was actually very tired.
I couldn't help but lean into his arms, hoping to find some comfort in his warm embrace.
Russel gently stroked my hair. I closed my eyes, trying to relax.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. I left Russel's embrace and looked towards the door with him.
Neil stood there coldly. Behind him was a sheepish Dominic.
I could feel Russel tense up. Both he and Neil were filled with hostility.
"Sorry to interrupt." Neil said coldly. His gaze finally landed on me; his eyes were filled with coldness.
"What's up?" Russel asked, his tone cool.
Neil didn't answer; he just glanced at Dominic. Dominic immediately came over and said to me, "Ms. Finch, can we discuss our companies' cooperation now?"
I looked at Dominic in surprise. I had been worrying about this matter for a while and even considered asking my uncle for help. But thinking of my mother's words, I held back.
"I'll go talk to him." I said to Russel.
