After Irene was rushed to the hospital, she underwent emergency treatment.
George and Megan repeatedly consulted with the doctor, inquiring whether surgery or some innovative treatment could extend their daughter's brief life.
But, all the responses they received were despairing.
At the bedside, George and Megan seemed to age a decade overnight, their hair turning silver as they watched over their daughter, their hearts torn with grief.
"Rena, don't scare us, please wake up. You need to be strong, okay?"
"We're all here cheering for you. Didn't you say you're as tough as a cockroach? Hang in there, and let's plan another road trip, okay?"
"You're everything to us, your parents. You have to pull through for us!"
"Rena, my girl… oh…"
Their voices reached Irene's ears, but she felt utterly powerless, her vision blurred by a bright white light. It took her a while to see her parents' faces and her friends' sorrowful expressions clearly.
To her surprise, Russell was there too. Standing on the outskirts of the crowd, his height made him stand out.
Why was he here?
Irene tried to speak but found she couldn't utter a word, only feeling an immense pain throughout her body.
"Rena, how can you leave us like this? What will your dad and I do…" Megan, seeing Irene awake, didn't feel joy but cried even harder instead.
Because she saw no glimmer of hope for survival in her daughter.
They didn't even understand how Irene had ended up in this state.
"Mom, Dad, I've let you down… I'm sorry. If there's another life, I'll make it up to you…" Irene managed to say, making her parents cry even more bitterly.
In their overwhelming grief, George and Megan turned and left the room, unable to bear seeing their daughter in such a tragic state.
Stella immediately came forward, holding Irene's hand tightly, "Rena, you have to remember me too. If there's another life, let's chat, be best friends again, like with Ali and Barbara. We're still the best of friends, okay?"
As she spoke, tears streamed down Stella's face, unable to contain the sorrow in her heart, she began to sob.
The room was filled with a mournful atmosphere.
Irene managed a weak smile, "Okay, we'll be best friends in the next life too, Stella. Can you do me one last favor?"
"Just say it…" Stella managed to say through her tears.
"Neil won't answer my calls. Can you call him for me? I just want to say a few last words to him." Irene had no strength left to speak further, but she was persistent about Neil.
Alicia choked up, "Rena, please don't be silly. You've already given everything for him. That's enough. At this time, don't let such a person taint your last moments."
Barbara agreed, advising against calling Neil.
However, Irene was adamant. She knew her time was short, and in her final moments, she had no regrets. Her parents were loving, and her friends were all by her side...
Neil was her only unresolved matter.
Struggling, Irene managed to grab her phone and dialed the number she knew by heart.
