The moment I said that, Faith's face changed instantly, and she gripped my hand tightly. "Irene, Neil's a jerk. He's just confused about who's right for him. Can you give him some more time?"
"Neil's not exactly short of women, you know. You don't need to do this." I gently removed my hand from Faith's grip. "If you don't want to send me home, I'll just call Bailey to pick me up."
"Ah, hold on a sec." Seeing my determined attitude, Faith helplessly shook her head and then arranged for a car to take me home.
I got in the car with Daisy, leaving without any hesitation. Back at my apartment, I settled Daisy and started working, reviewing some documents from FarHorizon Group and StarGlow Enterprises.
By the time Neil and Bonnie's engagement rolled around, the results from these documents, along with the data from Gloria's safe, all needed to be made public.
It wasn't long before news of Neil and Bonnie's engagement hit, shocking everyone with their flip-flopping relationship.
But Bonnie's PR turned their inconsistency into a story of lovers overcoming obstacles and recognizing their true feelings.
I didn't react because this was all part of the plan Neil and I had formulated.
Stella and the others, however, were getting antsy and came to me to vent.
"If Neil ever harasses you again, kick him to the curb!" Stella, who was pregnant with her second child, was even more worked up than me, so I quickly tried to calm her down.
"Neil's such a jerk for messing around with Bonnie. They're both unreliable!" Barbara, an expectant mother nearing her due date, was also indignant.
I was worried about their health, so I kept trying to soothe them.
After comforting them, I was about to get back to work when my assistant came in. "Ms. Finch, Bonnie's here. She wants to see you."
Bonnie, who'd been on a roll in the love department, hadn't come to see me in a while. Her sudden visit today was probably because of her upcoming engagement to Neil.
"Bring her up. Tell her I'm a bit busy, and she'll have to wait for a bit."
"Alright."
A few minutes later, I called Faith. This was probably the first time I've called her in a while.
Faith got excited, thinking I was shaken by the news of Neil's engagement.
"Irene, Neil's just momentarily blinded by Bonnie. He'll come to his senses soon." Faith spoke urgently, completely unaware that I had her on speaker and that my office door was half open.
"I'm done with Neil, and you should know him better than anyone…" Before I could finish, Bonnie barged in.
My assistant looked embarrassed. "Ms. Finch, Ms. Tueley insisted on coming in. I couldn't stop her."
I waved my assistant off, signaling her to step out.
Bonnie, in a white dress, walked lightly to the couch and sat down, her heels clicking on the floor.
I ignored her and continued talking to Faith. "Nothing can change Neil's decisions. I've spent ten years trying to make him love me, to no avail. I'm really tired."
